Governor Brown announced Wednesday that he will allow an advisory measure to go on the California ballot this November giving California voters the opportunity to voice support for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would overturn Citizens United, McCutcheon, Hobby Lobby and other Supreme Court decisions that are based on the absurd premise that corporations are people with constitutional rights.
The question on the California ballot will read: “Shall the Congress of the United States propose, and the California Legislature ratify, an amendment or amendments to the United States Constitution to overturn Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission (2010) 558 U.S. 310, and other applicable judicial precedents, to allow the full regulation or limitation of campaign contributions and spending, to ensure that all citizens, regardless of wealth, may express their views to one another, and to make clear that the rights protected by the United States Constitution are the rights of natural persons only?”
Move to Amend Sonoma County will be actively campaigning in support of this ballot measure. The work we have already done on this issue in Sonoma County has laid a great foundation for the months ahead. Please join us at our upcoming meeting Saturday, August 2 at 10:00am at the Arlene Francis Center, 99 6th Street in Santa Rosa. Please mark your calendar now! The corporations are going to feel threatened. We will need ALL HANDS ON DECK to counter their spin, and push us toward victory.
While this vote is advisory in nature and has no direct legal consequences, it will push the issues of corporate constitutional rights and money as speech into the spotlight. This is an opportunity for California to lead the nation toward amending the U.S. Constitution, so that We the People control our government, not the corporations and the super-rich. As they say...as goes California, so goes the nation!
