Two quick actions to support a Constitutional Amendment reversing Citizens United

Please take the following two quick actions in support of an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to that says corporations are not people, money is not speech.

    1) On the California State level, please call Governor Brown and ask him to sign the Overturn Citizens United Act (SB 1272). Click here for instructions.

You can also sign and share this petition, to encourage Brown to sign.

SB 1272 would put the following question on the California ballot this November:

“Shall the Congress of the United States propose, and the California Legislature ratify, an amendment or amendments to the United States Constitution to overturn Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission (2010) 558 U.S. 310, and other applicable judicial precedents, to allow the full regulation or limitation of campaign contributions and spending, to ensure that all citizens, regardless of wealth, may express their views to one another, and to make clear that the rights protected by the United States Constitution are the rights of natural persons only?”
Please share the petition to Governor Brown on Facebook!

    2) On the Federal level, please sign this petition asking the U.S. Senate to include ending corporate personhood in any Constitutional Amendment aimed at overturning Citizens United.

The U.S. Congress is currently considering SJR 19, a proposed Constitutional Amendment to overturn Citizens United. But SJR 19 does not address corporate personhood -- the Supreme Court doctrine that "corporations are people." This doctrine is the legal foundation of the Supreme Court's unpoplular Citizens United and McCutcheon rulings, as well as the recent "Hobby Lobby" decision granting corporations religious rights. In other cases, the Supreme Court has invoked corporate personhood to favor corporations over people in the areas of public health and safety, workers' rights and the environment. The plan is that SJR 19 will get a vote in the Senate this year -- before election season.

Please sign and share the petition asking the U.S. Senate to include ending corporate personhood in any amendment aimed at overturning Citizens United.

Lastly, please like and follow Move to Amend Sonoma County on Facebook

P.S. If these issues are important to you please join Move to Amend Sonoma County this Saturday, July 12, 10:00am - noon. We meet at the Arlene Francis Center, 99 6th Street, Santa Rosa 95401. At this meeting we'll be discussing how to proceed on these fronts. We'll also get a report from one of our members who visited the group 99Rise and took part in their recent occupation of the State Capitol demanding political equality for all Americans.
