Imperialism is rational, and corruption is correct cost benefit analysis, only if we define those who are to be benefited very narrowly, i.e. just "me" (egocentric thinking), or just "me and my group" (sociocentric thinking). A more comprehensive "circle of identification"--and, I would argue, a more enlightened one--includes at least the whole human species. Anything less comprehensive than that is, IMHO, some degree or other of sociopathy.
