Shawn Phillips Benefit Concert @ Cloverdale
United Church of Cloverdale presents a benefit concert with SHAWN PHILLIPS on Friday, September 10, 2010 at 7:30 PM (with a reception at 6:30). If you haven't heard of Shawn Phillips, "The best kept secret in the music business" according to the late rock impresario Bill Graham, this is your chance to be introduced up close and personal. The concert will be in the intimate and historic Ivy Church, 439 N Cloverdale Blvd.
Phillips has 18 albums to his credit, and a host of associations with some of the most respected names in the industry including Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood and many others. Beginning in the 1960's, Phillips made noteworthy contributions to popular music. He co-wrote Donovan's, "Sunshine Superman" album, jammed with roommate Tim Hardin, sang on the Beatles' "Lovely Rita," showed Joni Mitchell guitar techniques, introduced the sitar to pop music (years before George Harrison), performed at the Woodstock of Europe-"Isle of Wight," and was booked to be the lead singer of the Broadway smash "Jesus Christ Superstar." Throughout the 60's Phillips made the folk music scene: San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury to New York's Greenwich Village to London. Finally, in 1967 Phillips settled into the artsy hamlet of Positano, Italy, where he remained throughout the 1970's.
Phillips became a rock pioneer. Keeping true to his roots in folk music, he experimented with classical, fantasy iconography, surreal verse, mysticism and voice. The results produced record sales over three million. Four of his 18 albums, "Faces," "Bright White," "Furthermore" and "Do You Wonder" charted on Billboard's top 100. In addition, the singles, "Lost Horizon," "We" and "Woman" made Billboard's top 40. He also writes fairy tales, ballet scores, soundtracks and classical symphonies. And if that isn't enough, he is a certified firefighter and paramedic in his native state of Texas, and participates in marine rescue work in Port Elizabeth, South Africa where he lives with his wife and son.
Phillips' 2010 tour includes South Africa, Canada and North America. Following the concert in Cloverdale, he will be playing at Don Quixote's in Santa Cruz and Freight & Salvage in Berkeley. We are indeed, lucky to have an artist of his caliber performing in our cool little town of Cloverdale! For further information about Shawn Phillips, go to http://www.shawnphillips.com .
