Should Gun Owner's names and addresses be publicized?

A New York newspaper angered readers by publishing the names and addresses of people with gun permits in Westchester and Rockland counties. Did it go out of bounds?

See the article online in Healdsburg Patch, along with over 90 comments and a poll.

Re: Should Gun Owner's names and addresses be publicized?

Saw this. It was followed up by someone publishing the names and addresses of the employees of the paper, which I thought was hilarious. What I found to be unsurprisingly dishonest was that a reporter for the paper, who has a Concealed Carry Permit, managed to have his name kept off the list.

What it accomplished was to give criminals a list of places to avoid.

But thanks to you, he can be added to the list!

Your response is interesting in light of the information recently reply to my post of "How to Defend Against Home
Invasion?" I'm not remembering who responded that most break ins are done by criminals looking to steal guns.

So a list would save them some time in gathering up desired weapons from people's addresses listed.

No thanks to me. He was exposed by a local shortly after the event.

I would question that data for political agenda before I'd swallow it as is. It doesn't make sense. A person who carries concealed conscientiously will have the weapon with him/her when they're not at home, so a break-in/burglary is not going to find it. And odds are increased that a home invasion when occupied will be met by gun in hand. The addresses NOT on the list will be easier targets.

As for the question: "Should Gun Owner's names and addresses be publicized?", I see that as being in the same category as Ann Coulter (who I think is a couple turns short of a coil anyway) asking "Should Abortion Recipients's names and addresses be publicized?"

The purpose of both questions is to bring about division and set up opposition based on amplified fear and irrational emotionalism.

Neither addresses the issue of crazy people on drugs.

This led to a man's home being burglarized.
