    Texas to secede?

Apparently, there is a growing movement right now in Texas to secede from the Union! We not only have Libertarian crackpots, Texas also has secessionist nut-jobs as well, such as Larry Kilgore:

    Maybe, you're right!

Are you saying so because the rest of the U.S. would be better off without them or because you share strong Texan nationalist sentiment?

    Sincerely,

    Edward

    Re: Texas to secede?

Wait a minute! I think Texas should be encouraged to secede! The sooner the better. Actually, maybe all the so-called Red states should secede. And what about a California secession? Remember Ecotopia? I always thought that was an excellent idea. I'd certainly bumper-sticker my car with "Balkanize the U.S.".

These secessionist have always been around, it's nothing new. They're just getting some ink because of the election. I remember in 2004 when small groups of Californian's were trying to get Washington, Oregon and Cali to secede and join Canada if Bush won the election. Never happened.

It's free entertainment nonetheless, isn't it? And it does have a spiciness to it because we DID have a Civil War over this issue!

I think we still have the votes for the Left Coast to secede with either Mitt or Barack at the helm. What we lack is someone, or group to bankroll it.

Wish the natives cared more about restoring the land and social justice than helping Las Vegas fat cats build another casino.

Resist the notion that the government cannot be fixed.

Help Occupy 2/3rds of OUR states on the 5 most important issues at hand regarding toxic social and environmental justice; starting with de-funding all strike-first wars of choice; and refunding Main Street to replenish our safety and quality of life.

The Federal government needs the States to reign them in; they are incapable of doing it themselves.

Let's let the other 1/3 out of their contract. We can all migrate to what works; instead of fighting over what doesn't.

Secession can heal our nation. We don't have to fight it; we can make it a new reality show - "House Swap", based on a color coded values map to rediscover America, one moral majority at a time.

Last night the Sonoma State Students presented a statistics report for our General Plan Update. In just a few months, at very little cost to the City, their survey for the GPU was done. A dozen or so additional questions - and a values map could be born.

Using social science to shape democracy is our peaceful way to a new revolution.

If 2/3rds of the states gave their blessing for Texas, or any others to exit our union, it could be made so. New laws are enacted all the time. Time to think out of the box; no reason to force the issues we'll never agree on. Let's split up this unhappy marriage.

    Re: Texas to secede?

    Please do your homework:

The founders offered two mechanisms for changing the Constitution. The first is for the proposed bill to pass both halves of the U.S. Congress (House and Senate) by a two-thirds majority in each. Once the bill has passed both houses, it then goes to the states. While the Constitution does not impose a time limit on states for which to consider the amendment, Congress frequently includes one (typically seven years). In order to become an amendment, the bill must receive the approval of three-fourths of the states (38 states). This approval can be generated through either a state convention or a vote of the state legislature. In either case, a majority vote is necessary for passage. Often, the proposed amendment specifies the route which is necessary.

The second method prescribed is for a Constitutional Convention to be called by two-thirds of the state legislatures (34 states), and for that Convention to propose one or more amendments. These amendments are then sent to the states to be approved by three-fourths of the legislatures or conventions.
