“It is imperative we elect Kathleen and Kathy,” two former members of the Republican Central Committee wrote in a recent mailer about the current City Council election. If you agree, then vote for Ms. Shaffer and/or Ms. Austin, two likeable persons.
But the desperate letter, from former Republican Central Committee members Pete Pellini and Jim Pacatte, goes further. It alleges that “you have no representation at any level of government” and “your vote is wasted” if you vote for other candidates. Yet Ms. Shaffer is currently an elected official and the Republicans control the U.S. House of Representatives. It is one thing to disagree, which is a hallmark of democracy, but another to lie.
Pellini and Pacate also allege that “both John Eder and Robert Jacob are beholden to the same radical group that has hampered our town’s progress.” Yet successful local businessmen Jacob and Eder support the Barlow Project, currently Sonoma County’s second largest commercial development. It will provide numerous jobs and generate significant sales tax revenues for Sebastopol. Is that what the Republicans means by “radical?” The distributor of my own crops, FEED, is scheduled to move from his downtown garage into the Barlow. Yea!
Meanwhile, Ms. Austin and Ms. Shaffer’s recently-disclosed financial contributions and expenditures raise questions. The Los Angeles-based California Real Estate Political Action Committee has given each $1500. Ms. Austin has also taken money from Sonoma County Alliance, which represents construction and development interests. Though we have excellent local print shops in Sebastopol and nearby, their expensive printing has been done out-of-state and in Southern California.
Questions such as the following arise, “Whose interests do they really represent? How ‘sustainable’ is such outside funding and purchasing? Who is it that ‘has hampered our town’s progress’ by outside funding and purchasing?” GoLocal.
