    Political Ads

I'm not sure there's much difference between political cartoons and political ads, but I figure they deserve their own thread.

Since I, and I imagine most of you, don't watch TV and we're not in a swing state (and thus effectively dis-enfranchised) we don't get to see them often.

So please join me in curating a selection of worthy ones, from all sides of the aisle!

Here's a new, rather hard hitting one from the Prez:

    Re: Political Ads

Have we really sunk to this? Can we not have honest, rational public debate here? If this kind of nasty, cheap, dishonest and mean-spirited crap is what we can expect to be subjected to by clicking on a link here, then I for one am out of here. I am on the very verge of simply blocking ubaru's posts completely. I know she disavows responsibility for the content she links to, saying she is only the messenger. I say that if you publicly draw peoples' attention to something you are impicitly endorsing that thing.

And yes, I see the thread is for political ads not for rational debate, but should we not aim at some level of truth in advertising? Even given the latitude implied in advertising I stand by the above characterization and object to its being offered here.

    Re: Political Ads

Worth keeping in mind while we try to figure it all out (or just make some pop corn and enjoy the sad comedy):

"The major problems in the world are the result of the difference between how nature works and the way people think."
    Gregory Bateson

“One of the most horrible features of war is that all the war-propaganda, all the screaming and lies and hatred, comes invariably from people who are not fighting.” – George Orwell

"Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear."
-- Harry S. Truman, message to Congress, August 8, 1950

"The urge to save humanity is almost always a false front for the urge to rule." H. L. Mencken

"We have seen how power became divorced from right, how power opposed right and crushed it, so that the State became an instrument for destroying right — a highly organized band of robbers, capable of threatening the whole world and driving it to the edge of the abyss."
    -Pope Benedict XVI

I'm amazed he posted that (above), being that he would have left GM go bankrupt!

The next one, even that I don't agree with it, is more effective:

oh, it's well deserved. Looks like Rove is finding out what Nixon found out in 1960. Richard Daley's boys played hardball and are good at it - as are his spiritual heirs. The Dems didn't used to be as easy pushovers as they were following the Kennedy years. My hometown boys are back. The hounds have been unleashed. 'bout time.

more seriously, haven't people (at least Obama supporters) been clamoring for him to respond at least somewhat in kind to the attacks? His connection to the Daley machine, and really, even to Harold Washington's group, isn't all that strong (apparently). But the image and history of bare-knuckle Chicago politics seem to answer something that's been missing from the Democrats for years.

    Re: Political Ads

It seems to me that both sides assume the average american is not only ignorant, but downright stupid, if not brain dead.

Both of the Obombney twins are insulting to our intelligence.

We've graduated from the lesser of two evils, to the evil of two lessers.

I'll either write in Ron Paul, or not bother to waste my vote and time legitimizing these two.

There's plenty of hard hitting messaging that could be made that doesn't stoop to level of right's dis-information campaign.

    Absolutely, there sure is!

I am not particularly an " Obama supporter" (but Romney?... NO F-ing WAY!)... Will either of them get my vote this time?... No.
As for the "clamoring": I have been at wits-end at various times wondering why the Dem's have been so wimpy and lackluster in regards to rebuttals and honest hard-hitting counter attacks to the Repub's disinformation spin-attacks.
If it is because of their vanity about (their) "image" in public view that they don't want to "look like" the republicans, (then) they need a loud and clear wake-up call because they are always better off "looking like" (them) at times when counter attacking than actually "being like" them in actual function.

When I watched this on the TV last week, I felt completely validated. It has dawn on me how non-fundamentalist Muslims probably feel about the fanatics in their countries and the Taliban and Osama's little group has been on my mind almost continually lately because these so-called Republicans are looking a lot like terrorist to me. They must be stopped!
