    NEW MONSOON:

San Francisco rock quintet New Monsoon is the collaborative vehicle for the vocal and instrumental prowess of founding members Bo Carper (acoustic guitar and banjo), Jeff Miller (electric guitar) and Phil Ferlino (keys). Now well into its second decade of national touring, the band also features the muscular young rhythm section of Marshall Harrell (electric bass) and Michael Pinkham (drums). New Monsoon’s exhilarating blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation shines in an irresistible blend of sophisticated song craft, inventive musical exploration and down home rock-n-roll.

“They have a collective power that comes off as a real unified force on stage.. It’s not just a band, you know? It’s something transcendental.” – Michael Shrieve (original drummer, Santana)

New Monsoon is currently touring behind two albums. The latest studio album, New Monsoon V, was produced by long time Grateful Dead sound engineer John Cutler; while New Monsoon Live is the first release to feature the current rhythm section on tunes from all eras of the band’s deep catalog.

Miller and Ferlino have also recently formed a supergroup collective, The Contribution, along with Tim Carbone (Railroad Earth) and String Cheese Incident members Jason Hann and Keith Moseley. SCI Fidelity Records released Which Way World, The Contribution’s inaugural album, in March 2010. Carper performs as a solo act and as half of the duo, Bo & Lebo, with Dan Lebowitz of ALO.

“[New Monsoon is]…one of the best jam bands to come out of Marin County.”

    CAST OF CLOWNS:
“[Cast of Clowns is ] a new jam band supergroup…Whether they’re jamming a Garcia or Grateful Dead tune or one of Wright’s own, the result is a transformation of silver into dance jam gold.”
    --Eugene Weekly 2008

Cast of Clowns was founded by Craig Wright (Redemption Center, Elijah) & Greg Anton (Zero, Heart of Gold). The band will include Melvin Seals (famed organist of The Jerry Garcia Band who has also played with Chuck Berry & Elvin Bishop) and Bobby Vega (Jerry Garcia, Santana, Jefferson Starship, Tower of Power).

Cast of Clowns songs are written by Craig Wright, Greg Anton and Robert Hunter (Grateful Dead).

“the Cast of Clowns fun machine consists of psychedelic tricksters who helped create the jamband world as well as emerging voices of what’s to come.”
    - Dead.net

Delicious affordable food will be available and there will be a bouncy house and activities for kids. Bring a blanket and enjoy a beautiful day and some outstanding music!

Re: Barry's Pick: The San Geronimo Summer Music Festival: New Monsoon and Cast of Clowns

Throughout my events career one of the things that's been most important to me is introducing people to musicians they haven't heard before. I'm proud to have helped many emerging talents find new audiences, to have introduced a variety of acts to Marin audiences, and helped many people find new music that they love. My music events are eclectic - not everyone loves a cappella, rock, world, avant-garde, etc. (though happily many of you are eclectic as I am) because what I believe in is the quality of the music and what the artists bring to our community.

So speaking of quality artists...since you're busy and might not have time to watch the youtube and read the details about the New Monsoon & Cast of Clowns outdoor benefit show this Saturday at San Geronimo Valley Community Center. I try to give you some signposts to help you get oriented quickly like the title of this email "if you like CSN (Crosby Stills & Nash), JGB (Jerry Garcia Band) or Santana..." hoping (if you're not already one of their many local fans) that this along with mention of bands the musicians have played with, awards and press raves (for more info check coverage in West Marin Citizen and Point Reyes Light as well as the Marin IJ Best Bet yesterday) they've received will give you a feeling of whether you want to take a chance on checking out some great new music:
See New Monsoon this Saturday at San Geronimo Valley Community Center.
Wanting to make the benefit event more accessible to people we set up several advance ticket discounts which will end later today for individuals, families and groups. FYI box office will open with the gate at 3:30pm. If you enjoy high quality rock and roll hope to see you Saturday - and please tell me how you like the bands! All the best, Hannah
