Pasted in below is an e-mail titled;
Fort Lauderdale Food Not Bombs organizers arrested in city campaign against volunteers
The copy paste of the "action alert" e-mail from Keith McHenry - cofounder
of Food Not Bombs is not an isolated incident. It is current, as of today.
In fact, I just got off of the phone with him. His contact information is in the post, below.
For examples of the politics of this on a national scale, there are a
number of reports posted at:
National Coalition for the Homeless
Two examples of their posted reports that are specific to this:
(NEW!) A Place at the Table: Prohibitions on Sharing Food with People Experiencing Homelessness
Homes Not Handcuffs: The Criminalization of Homelessness in U.S. Cities, a new report by The National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty and The National Coalition for the Homeless, 2009

"It is all about the money"
Excerpts:
Tracking the political money trail of homelessness criminalization
The San Francisco Chronicle newspaper ran a story that stated, "general
assistance rolls for the homeless have been slashed by 73 percent -in a story titled,
About 800 homeless move inside with Care Not Cash
Monday, May 2, 2005 San Francisco Chronicle
By Kevin Fagan, Chronicle Staff Writer Page B1

What the story does not tell you is that many of the homeless fled the area because
of their being criminalized and harassed. As was documented in a Press Democrat
story that I cite later on this blog, with the excerpts from the story titled;
UKIAH'S TRANSIENTS VANISH:
CITY'S NEW ORDINANCES BARRING PANHANDLING,
ILLEGAL CAMPING VIRTUALLY CLEAR THE STREETS,
Published on March 5, 2005, The Press Democrat
Links are given to the reports and reference material of the
meanest cities in America that have criminalized being
homeless with laws and ordinances that they have passed.
Most of which are patterned after programs in San Francisco
where the mayor is now running for governor. His "program"
reduced the general assistance rolls (welfare) by over 70%.
Resulting in swarms of homeless people descending on
other communities that had to pass similar laws because
they were overwhelmed by the flood of homeless people.
While San Francisco kept all of the money that they got
from HUD to "help the homeless".

Protest Fort Lauderdale Police Campaign Against Food Not Bombs
Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at 5:30 Stranahan Park - 10 E. Broward Blvd. Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301
The harassment of the Fort Lauderdale Food Not Bombs volunteers continued at their May Day theatric game of capture the flag in downtown Fort Lauderdale. When the volunteers arrived the police were taunting a group of people resting on the grass outside the public library. The police continued up to the Food Not Bombs cars and started threatening the activists with tickets and questioning them about our activities. A local woman was walking her dg across the same lawn as the police were harassing Food Not Bombs. From then on they harassed the Food Not Bombs volunteers every place they walked in the quiet downtown streets. After an hour police officer J. Czech arrested two of the volunteers, Nathan Pim and Hunter Altschul. The police claimed they arrested the Nate and Hunter for trespassing on a grassy lawn outside a bank tower. This is part of an ongoing campaign against the homeless of Fort Lauderdale and the volunteers of Food Not Bombs. The police moved a tower into Stranahan Park after they started harassing the group. Fort Lauderdale Police Officer J. Czech has been involved in a long running effort to disrupt Food Not Bombs and the homeless near Stranahan Park. On Thursday, February 17, 2011 the Fort Lauderdale Police raided the Food Not Bombs house kicking in a bed room door and asking the volunteers if they were terrorists. Police returned on Saturday, February 19th and again questioned the volunteers and ticketed volunteers while driving near their home. Food Not Bombs called the National Lawyers Guild and has been given support. Food Not Bombs is also calling on the publics support by contacting local city officials and expressing their support for Food Not Bombs.
Officials are also attempting to silence Food Not Bombs in other cities around Florida. On April 12, 2011 the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the City of Orlando could limit Food Not Bombs right to share information and food to the public to twice a year per park. Other Florida cities may follow Orlando's path. This ruling comes at a time when the message of Food Not Bombs is more important than ever. Poverty and hunger are increasing as military spending grows and public investment social services, education and healthcare are slashed. The city of Orlando could begin its arrests of Food Not Bombs volunteers as early as May 18, 2011, the first meal 30 days after the ruling. Food Not Bombs groups have been invited to share free food and literature under their banner that week in a global defiance of this order.
