    The bees are saved!

Ring the bells! The bees are saved!

If you have heard of a pandemic currently suffered by bees worldwide called "Colony Collapse Disorder" (CCD) then you know that bees are in danger of extinction. This would mean the loss of 1/3 of the world's food supply and also the extinction of most fruits and vegetables. Saving the bees, in large measure, also means saving the humans. A huge number of other animal species around the globe depend on many of the same foods that are pollinated by bees. Therefore, many other animal species would also come under threat of extinction, including chickens, cattle, pigs, horses, etc. The extinction of the bee would destroy the food chain everywhere.

However, the refreshingly good news is that the Africanized Honeybee (AHB, Africanized bee - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) is resistant to all of the pressures under which the European Honeybee has been succumbing to. In short, our food supply is relatively safe along with all of those yummy fruits and vegetables that we have enjoyed all of our lives to keep us healthy, happy, and well fed. You can see in the animated gif image below that the AHB reached the U.S. in 1990 and has introduced itself into all of the states along the southern borderline of our nation, from California to Florida. The AHB's expansion includes more inland states such as Arkansas, Missouri, Nevada, and has already reached as far north as Modesto, California. As the colonies of European Honeybees are decimated by CCD (especially in the wild) the AHB successfully replaces them, undaunted by the same destructive forces that have annihilated the European bees:

Now, for the bad news. The AHB is one mean-ass, motherfucker! You could be walking by, 50 feet away from their hive, and if they feel threatened by you, apparently just through sight or smell, they will blanket you with hundreds of stingers. Some people have even died from the attacks, although death is uncommon. We are all going to have to learn to live with this new, violent neighbor, whether we like it or not. It's a small price to pay to keep our food supply and the truly great diversity of delicious, nutritious foods we need and enjoy.

So, congratulations to all of us!

    Edward
