With more and more information coming out about toxic chemicals
in children's toys, you would think that some thing would be said
about the safety of sex toys, for adults.

In 1988, Patricia Hunt was conducting a routine experiment in her lab at Case
Western Reserve University when she ran into an unforeseen complication.
The geneticist noticed that 40 percent of the eggs of mice in her control
group—the group she was not experimenting on—had defects in chromosome
behavior, the kind of defects that can lead to genetic errors like Down
syndrome in humans, and that normally occur in just 1 to 2 percent of all
    mouse eggs.

It turns out that a lab tech had washed the cages and the chemical reactions
from the detergent caused the plastic cages to become very toxic. One of the
chemicals identified as a problem was Bisphenol A (BPA). In a phone
conversation with her, I was told that other chemicals such as phthalates
may also pose a problem, after washing. It seems that the "safety testing"
of plastic material did not include the safety of the products and possible
chemical exposures, after washing (1). And lets consider that the mice were
living in the plastic cages. The plastic was not inserted inside of the
mice at any time, nor in any way (1).

But there are a few other facts to consider with the known effects of such
chemicals on humans. A Congressional Report states that of the 1,400 chemicals
known to cause cancer, less than 6% are tracked (145B).

The study by the General Accounting Office was begun at the request of

Democratic Reps. Henry A. Waxman and Maxine Waters, both of Los Angeles,
Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco and other members of Congress. Pelosi announced
the findings in May of 2000 at a House subcommittee hearing on children and

    environmental health. (145B).

Presently, there is a nine member scientific panel deciding what
toxic chemicals California residents will be tested for and how
they will be tested. Though there is little public interest and even
less from the press and media. Even so, there does appear to
be plenty of interest from such special interest groups as chemical
companies (2). It was reported in the LA Daily news that a number of
special interest groups had blocked the California legislation SB1379,
for this "biomonitoring", on numerous occasions (2). The nine member
board had five appointed by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
One of the chemicals being debated for testing is Bisphenol A (BPA).

The Biomonitoring Program in California is now underway. The
upcoming "Public Input Meetings" with the nine member scientific
advisory panel that will decide who gets tested for what and how
they will get tested are posted at the
California Environmental Contaminant Biomonitoring Program https://www.oehha.ca.gov/multimedia/biomon/index.html

These are public meetings, even if they are "under reported" in
the press. The Breast Cancer Fund www.breastcancerfund.org
has been the main driving force behind the California Biomonitoring
    legislation and program.

How does this apply to silicone?

And how does this apply to products manufactured in the US versus in China?

Re: Washing "Sex Toys" might cause toxic chemical reactions

I have to tell you all a story in which I think is funny. I had bought a couple of storage units and in one unit was ALOT of SEX toys.. I called one of "the sex" shops ( embaressed) , why I do not know , but i had asked how to clean and sanitize these Large items and they said to put them in the dishwasher without the heat cycle. I did and went to work. I called my mom , whom i was staying with at the time , and i asked how she was doing and her response was , " Boy these are heavy "-- I cannot even imagine what she thought when she opened her dishwasher !
