    A caterpillar's declaration

There were two caterpillars sitting on a lettuce leaf, munching away when a butterfly fluttered by. One caterpillar looked at the other and said "You'll never get me up in one of those."

Does the caterpillar's statement mean it is clueless about its destiny?
Or might it otherwise or also mean that the caterpillar is unaware of its potential?
Or is the caterpillar indeed aware of what is expected of it and is in denial?
Are all of these possible views of the caterpillar essentially the same thing?
Is there a deeper message embedded in the story?
