    Favorite workout music and rig?

    Hi Everybody!

I just re-joined Coaches Corner to keep me from atrophying in front of my computer. Now all I have to do is get there and workout! Once I get into a routine, I plan to use my ipod and nice headphones to help make it more palatable.

So my question is: What do you listen to when you work out? And what do you use to listen to it?

Do you have favorite music that has just the right rhythm for rowing or cycling? Is there a podcast the keeps you interested/inspired? Are you listening to a book on "tape"?

Also, are you particularly happy with you rig (ie ipod or other MP3 device? Really great headphones?) Let us know!

    Playlist
I started with some live Grateful Dead. That was great for a while but I see I need to pick the songs more carefully. I also got bit distracted, with more energy grounded in the concert experience and what it evoked rather, rather than my workout. But it was fun!

    Rig
I'm using one of the new Ipod Nanos which works fine and its small size is a pleasure! I find the controls a bit too small though. I've got some really fine Etymotic ER-4P Portable In-Ear Earphones that sound great and do a good job keeping out the ambient noise and are comfortable enough. (I was hoping to try the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro headphone too, but they are back ordered on Amazon.).

I'm finding it odd to be so much in my own space in a public space, but I look forward to the time where I can just plug in to some good tunes and row for a half hour and have great time being with the music and using the rowing as a dance!

How about you? Do you use headphones at the gym? What do you listen to?

My razor has a 2gb card so I use it for everything. A Wacco dear introduced me to headphones that are bluetooth and I can talk too! BLESS YOU JAMES AND SUZANNE!!! No more complaints people can't hear me or me them plus they are stereo so I can totally enjoy my music.

To workout depends on what I am doing, sometimes just mantras, but usually its podcasts and that is TOTALLY Violet Blue all the way!

Re: Favorite workout music and rig?

    Hi Barry,

I have to say my absolute favorite music to workout to is Amadou & Mariam's Dimance a Bamako, produced by Manu Chao.

For a rig I currently have an older iPod Mini with a cheap pair of sony headphones—the kind that go around the back of the neck.

I find that with the sweat and all I don't want to ruin good - great equipment.

Also, my sense is that the iPod shuffle is probably the best iPod to workout with as it is the most invisible, doesn't get in the way and is great for focused and concentrated music lists.

Currently my workout song list is:

    Venus by Bananarama
    Black Diamonds and Pearls: Blackalicious
    Silver Wheels: Bruce Cockburn
Les Portes du Souvenir: Les Nubiens
    Kashmir: Led Zeppelin
Rebel Never Gets Old: David Bowie
    Rainin in Paradize: Manu Chao
    Stranger in Moscow: Michael Jackson
    Ever Present Past: Paul McCartney
    Feelin' Love: Paula Cole
Everybody Wants to Rule The World: Tears for Fears
Now That We've Found Love: Third World
Close But No Cigar: Thomas Dolby
    First In Flight: Blackalicious
What's So Funny About Pleace, Love and Understanding: Elvis Costello
    Casino Nation: Jackson Browne
    A Thousand Years: Sting
    Shaking the Tree: Peter Gabriel
    Use Me: Bill Withers
    Talk (Junkie XL Remix) Coldplay
Wasteland of the Free: Iris DeMent

    -----------------

    Other favorites are:

    Natascha Atlas
    Enigma: Love, Sensuality and Devotion
Dub Qawwali: Gaudi and Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn
    Afrocelts: Seed or anything else...
The Lama's Chant: Lama Gyurme (for a totally different experience)

Re: Favorite workout music and rig?

    Hi there!

I too have joined Coaches Corner and am motivating myself to get a set gym schedule established. Upping the quality of my self-care is a major goal for me in 2008. Exercise is such an important component. That being said, I really feel that the music you listen to can make or break an exercise session. It's important for me to listen to something really upbeat that can get me pumped for my workout. Let's face it, it can be challenging to make it to the gym, let alone endure a workout! In my opinion, anything with a good beat that builds in intensity is a great option. I personally use a Lyra RCA MP3 and I love it. It's only 512 megabytes (holds about 90 songs), but has the ability to add a memory card. It has the capacity to program tracks and comes with a sports band that carries the device on your upper arm. I love it and couldn't hit the gym without it. It is also very affordable. As far as the music I like to listen to when working out, I am a huge fan of Crystal Method. Their music is primarily instrumental, high energy, electronica. It's great for keeping you going through a workout. All of their albums are great, but one of their best is Vegas. You might want to check it out. Congratulations on your decision to put yourself first by getting back to the gym. I wish you much success and hope my suggestions help.
