AN APRIL AFTERNOON

Following the soft gold dog
through the tall green grass
while the sun
moves in and out of huge gray clouds
overhead
I nibble on spicy
purple and white wild radish flowers
and sweet wisteria blossoms that
trail over the fence
surrounding the strangely wild lot
we've discovered
in the center
of this suburban neighborhood
of matching houses
with their tidy lawns
all laid out in neat rows.
A sudden gust of wind
a shower of cool rain
chases us back to our car
and we are off again.
