What can we do? UN warns of extinction, flooding from global warming

A United Nations panel warned global warming will cause extinctions to mount, water shortages to spread and droughts and floods to become more frequent as man-made emissions of greenhouse gases cause the Earth to warm.
    https://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?...o&refer=europe

If present trends continue one half of all species of life on earth will be extinct in less than 100 years, as a result of habitat destruction, pollution, invasive species, and climate change.
    https://www.well.com/user/davidu/extinction.html

    Some of them were dreamers
And some of them were fools
Who were making plans and thinking of the future
With the energy of the innocent
    They were gathering the tools
They would need to make their journey back to nature
While the sand slipped through the opening
And their hands reached for the golden ring
With their hearts they turned to each other's heart for refuge
In the troubled years that came before the deluge

    Some of them knew pleasure
And some of them knew pain
And for some of them it was only the moment that mattered
And on the brave and crazy wings of youth
They went flying around in the rain
And their feathers, once so fine, grew torn and tattered
And in the end they traded their tired wings
For the resignation that living brings
And exchanged love's bright and fragile glow
For the glitter and the rouge
And in a moment they were swept before the deluge

Now let the music keep our spirits high
And let the buildings keep our children dry
Let creation reveal it's secrets by and by
    By and by...
When the light that's lost within us reaches the sky

    Some of them were angry
At the way the earth was abused
By the men who learned how to forge her beauty into power
And they struggled to protect her from them
    Only to be confused
By the magnitude of her fury in the final hour
And when the sand was gone and the time arrived
In the naked dawn only a few survived
And in an attempt to understand a thing so simple and so huge
Believed that they were meant to live after the deluge

Now let the music keep our spirits high
And let the buildings keep our children dry
Let creation reveal it's secrets by and by
    By and by...
When the light that's lost within us reaches the sky

For a very scary, shocking, exhilarating, and thoughtful end of the world scenario, read Cormac McCarthy's "The Road".

Harlan Ellison’s "A Boy And His Dog", written back in the early seventies is a sick but humorous approach to the dilemma.

And Matt Savinar's site: https://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/ has oodles of information on the subject.

What I wanna know is, when the tundra permafrost melts, how will the refugees from the burning latitudes near the equator, if they can make it that far, find a way to get around in thousands of miles of dieing muddy, gooey swamp land? Assuming any of it is still above seawater.

There's a reason I exist in a permanent state of being really, really pissed off, except in those times I just distract myself and am not thinking about what we're doing to our Mother, ourselves and everybody else alive on this planet.

(Note: the last category refers to all NON-Humans.)

Never Underestimate the Power of Human Stupidity.
On the other hand It's Good Not to Underestimate the Power of Human Creativity and Loving Consciousness.
It's been a neck and neck race for millennia; we seem to have come into "the", or at least "a", final stretch.
All bets are off. I'm hoping for a photo finish for consciousness and creativity.
But when I start looking at things closely, "in the harsh light of day", I'm less sanguine.

Matt Savinar recommends finding good, compatible and resourceful friends, getting some land on high ground with arable soil and a clean water source, stockpiling necessities and when it all goes to shit, hunker down and try to ride out the horror, slaughter and chaos.

Me, I don't have the funds for such a project.

My friend F.M.D. says he wouldn't want to live in a Mad Max world and it might not happen for a while yet.

People have been predicting the "End of The World" since there have been people. Before the 1930's we didn't have the means, it was going to be an act of God. Since then we've created the scientific methods to create our own ultimate nightmare. Hopefully it won't be a self-fulfilling prophecy, but if it is, I for one won't be surprised. Shocked, pissed, sad, (a LOT more than usual!?) but not surprised. Sort of like 9/11. Only much, much, much bigger.

Being poisoned by truck exhaust at work does wonders for the mood.

    Nice song!
right on miles! It's interesting to me that this is "news" to some folk,
how many of us wept when they lit the oil fields at the end of the FIRST
gulf(Global) war! I did, I had the good luck to meet Bucky Fuller who called this whole shot in 1971,and Adam Trombly,a then gov.meteriologist who discovered ozone depletion,(they fired him and re-named it "The ozone hole" so that you could imagine it was some where else) remember that?
the oil field fires happened consecutively with the eruption of mt pinatubo in the Philippians same year, global smog cover for several years to come , then we had Regan's, de-regulation of the industries.
So I've been paying attention to what we could do for 36 years!
there's a lot. Know that Landfills are now the no 1 contributor to the green house gas effect! eat at restaurants, ask them if they compost or donate food waste to pigfarms. go to ANDY"S ask them to stop putting
food in their dumpster, and while you're at it the florescent tubes shouldn't be in there either. I gave them a re-cycle address for those a year ago, they ignored it (that would cost them 10$ now and then, better the dump personnel should be exposed to toxic mercury!)
Yes I'm nozy I NOTICE what people are feeding mother earth.
So can you. Composting yet? Nico

or you can go join the commune in the mid west somewhere where the core belief is "Hospice is the only way to go,forget saving the world, nurture the leftovers and try to live a decent life and grieve the pain and sorrow"
personally, I think these people are on to something, at least they aren't running arguing about what to DO next! And our culture has forgotten how to grieve.
I can tell you one thing,Hydrogen cars and a nice condo on mars are a mad republican dream.!
but hey maybe junior will get there cryogenicaly and have the last laf on all of us, jetsons a go go who needs a planet,as long as you have Marlboros and coke!,hey wait isn't tobacco grown in earth?..maybe hydroponically with moon rocks ,and coke..lessee,whats THAT made of..
    hmmm Nico

And here are a couple other relevant quotes:

"The two most common elements in the universe are hydrogen...and stupidity."
    --Harlan Ellison

"Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe."

    --Frank Zappa

    Regarding Human Stupidity,

I realized after about seven years of studying Western Philosophy, both mainstream and alternative, that often the smartest thing one can say is, "I don't know." I try to remember that when my students tell me it.

The people who are convinced they have the answers, are the ones who are truly stupid. It's those of us who recognize our own limitations, that have perhaps begun to glimpse wisdom.

In other words, if you think you're stupid, you're probably not. And if you think you're the smartest thing since the discovery of fire, you're being stupid!

Course, if everyone keeps telling you you're smart, eventually you might be convinced. Then where are you?

The Fool, the Trickster uses seeming stupidity to make the most intelligent interventions in the status quo.

This stuff is tricky, but FUN! So have fun, and don't be too stupid, just stupid enough to know..... !?

Or, as an ex-Office Technician inmate who worked in my current office before I started, told me today, talking about the nadir that is "The Q".

"It is what it is, that's all I can really say about it, it is what it is on all levels, and in every sense of the words..."

I think I know what he means, but never having served time, I probably don't.

That's the definition of insanity I understand, too, Lorrie.

Re: What can we do? UN warns of extinction, flooding from global warming

I'm trackin' with you on this, Miles. It takes humility to admit "I don't know" and unfortunately humility isn't real popular in this country anymore. That is, the practice of it isn't popular. The appreciation of it is still popular, but not the practice of it.

When I read about the threats of extinction that we're being warned about, it makes me remember the dinosaurs. That leads me to wonder what the cavemen did to cause the global warming that caused the dinosaurs' extinction.

Or is global warming just a natural cycle of nature, happening DESPITE our polluting the air, land and sea, rather than BECAUSE we're polluting the planet?

    I don't know.

(See? I must be smart!...DOH! But you said I'm not if I say I am. DOH!...But I don't know, so I must be smart...DOH! Now I'm dumb again. LOL DOH! Now my head hurts. )

    Don
