Dr. Campbell's COVID-19 Updates (January Updates)

    WELCOME TO 2021!

Here the first January COVID-19 update from Dr. Campbell. This update looks at the various vaccines, successful vaccination roll-outs, and when to give the second dose. He also reports on how effective the Oxford vaccine is vs. the Pfizer vaccine. 01/02/21.

The Oxford vaccine is now approved in India. India has been particularly hard-hit by this virus, so this is really good news. So far, the efficacy of those vaccinated with one dose of the Oxford vaccine in the U.K. is 100% for protection against severe illness and hospitalization at three weeks after injection. (But, watch the video for more information.) The Oxford vaccine probably won't be approved in the U.S. until April. As I've mentioned before, the Oxford vaccine is the least expensive of all of the vaccines approved so far (something like $2.85 per dose, or so).

Re: Dr. Campbell's COVID-19 Updates (January Updates)

Another new COVID-19 update from Dr. Campbell. This one is a global update. 01/03/21.

Two new literature reviews in the Annals of Internal Medicine suggest face masks provide protection to the wearer and substantially reduce the spread of COVID-19. Over 100 research articles were reviewed and concluded that masking can substantially reduce the spread of several viruses, including COVID-19 and "the flu." Aside from mask discomfort, they concluded that there are no adverse problems because of masks, such as elevated CO2 levels.

Two COVID-19 updates from Dr. Campbell. The first is a truly interesting and *long* discussion about COVID-19 with Dr. Campbell and Roger Seheult, MD (from Loma Linda University - which is my alma mater, too). The second is a shorter update about COVID-19 re-infection (catching it again after you've had it). 01/04/21.

A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) has confirmed previously reported microvascular damage (mini-strokes or hemorrhages) in the brains of 10 of 13 individuals who died from COVID-19. This has previously been reported as also being present in other organ systems in the body, as well. Previous reports have also suggested these findings are present in individuals in all age groups who had minimal COVID-19 symptoms.

Today's COVID-19 update from Dr. Campbell. This one is an international update. 01/05/21.

Here is an article about the debate of how long to wait before giving the second dose of a vaccine. If we delay, more people can get the first shot. The U.K. is doing this. The U.S. is not. (Let me know if you can't access the article.)

Re: Dr. Campbell's COVID-19 Updates (January Updates)

Here are several new COVID-19 updates from Dr. Campbell. The first is an update with Dr. Harvey Belik from Israel (where things are going well). About mid-way there's a brief discussion about the anticipated "green passports" (which many countries will offer) for people who have had the virus or been vaccinated to identify you when you travel. The second is an update from Ireland (where things are not going well) and elsewhere. The third is a more global update and a look into new information about the origin of the virus, and about smoking and COVID. 01/07/21.

A new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) suggests 59% of people (more than half) who catch COVID-19 catch it from someone with NO symptoms.

Take it for what it's worth, but a new study conducted by Pfizer (not yet peer-reviewed) says that the Pfizer vaccine IS effective against the new COVID-19 mutation.

Today's COVID-19 update from Dr. Campbell. This one is an update about the U.K and the U.S., with a bit about the South Africa variant virus and travel. 01/08/21.

Here is a video regarding Sonoma County's strategy and heirarchy for distributing the vaccine(s).

Re: Dr. Campbell's COVID-19 Updates (January Updates)

Here is today's COVID-19 update from Dr. Campbell. This is a general update, starting with the U.S. 01/09/21.

The FDA is now warning that individuals who catch the new COVID-19 mutant virus may have false negative tests for COVID. This could be important because some employers won't give you paid time off for COVID if you have a negative test. People don't seem to get sicker than is typical with COVID with the mutant COVID, but it is affecting ALL AGES GROUPS more equally now. So, if you're still thinking your younger age will protect you, that has changed now.

Here is a new COVID-19 update from Dr. Campbell. This one is a general update. 01/10/21.

A study in England suggests two immunosuppressive drugs normally used to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) are helpful in reducing death rates from COVID-19. Tocilizumab (Actemra) and sarilumab (Kevzara) reportedly reduce death rates by 8.5% in hospitalized and severely ill patients. It's not much...but, it's something. Basically, about 1 out of 12 patients. These results are not yet peer-reviewed.

Reports about a new coronavirus variant originating in the U.S. are speculative and inaccurate according to the CDC. The theory came from Deborah Birx, MD, a member of the White House coronavirus task force. There is NO evidence at this time.

Two new COVID-19 updates from Dr. Campbell. The first one is about fevers. The second one is an international update. 01/13/21.

The State of California has now authorized ALL INDIVIDUALS 65 years old and older to be immunized. How this will happen in Sonoma County has not been described yet.

Re: Dr. Campbell's COVID-19 Updates (January Updates)

Here is today's COVID-19 update from Dr. Campbell. This one has some very interesting information about the "SIREN Study" (of people who caught COVID during the First Wave last year). Also some about the W.H.O. team that is in China investigating COVID-19 origins. And it ends with some data about the terrible situation in Lebanon. 01/14/21.

"Long-COVID" is back in the news. These are the people who got COVID who have lingering symptoms many months after the initial infection. A new study from China looked at more than 1700 patients 6 months after being discharged from the hospital after having COVID. Significant fatigue or muscle weakness was seen in 63%, sleep difficulties were seen in 26%, and anxiety or depression was seen in 23%. Those who were severely ill very often had ongoing lung/breathing problems. Similar findings have been reported in smaller studies done elsewhere.

I'd recommend patience, too. I know several counties felt a bit blind-sided by this and don't think they have enough vaccine or even the infrastructure to distribute it.
Probably best to wait and let the county say it's finished the first round - truly elders and first-providers - before competing with them.

Re: Dr. Campbell's COVID-19 Updates (January Updates)

Here are two more COVID-19 updates from Dr. Campbell. The first is about a surprising new study ("The RECOVERY trial") that suggests convalescent plasma (antibodies from people who have recovered from COVID) is NOT helpful in treating active COVID (at least in patients already in the inflammatory phase of the illness). The second is an international update, starting with the U.S. (where new cases MAY be decreasing) and the U.K. 01/17/21.

The Johnson & Johnson/Janssen 1-dose vaccine (Ad26.COV2.S) appears to be showing early 90% efficacy which increases to 100% by about 2-months. This appears to be true in ALL age groups (no racial data). In terms of how this vaccine works, it's most like the Oxford/AstraZeneka vaccine (a bit of COVID-19 DNA spliced into an inactive adenovirus). Neither of these vaccines is currently approved in the U.S. Even though it's 1-dose, a "booster" dose might be needed later at some date (unclear). Also, if you've previously had an adenovirus infection (with flu-like symptoms) it's possible these two vaccines might not work for you (unclear).

Re: Dr. Campbell's COVID-19 Updates (January Updates)

Here is today's COVID-19 update from Dr. Campbell. This one looks mainly at the U.S. and the U.K. 01/19/21.

We have almost reached 25% of the population exposed to COVID-19 in both the U.S. and the U.K. Which means, without vaccinations, we are about one-quarter of the way through this pandemic.

I'm not usually one to publish media reports, but here is a VERY important warning about the new COVID-19 mutations with is rapidly spreading in the U.S. They are VERY HIGHLY CONTAGEOUS IN ALL AGE GROUPS. It's never been more important to take precautions!
