So does this mean that there is no point in bothering to wear a mask at all?

Re: How to Sterilize the N95 Mask at Home + How One Gets Infected

Thanks for this info re: cleaning a mask!

Simple and easy, but I don't get the reason for putting the scrubber on top...

I'd prefer not to use a scrubber...

Possibly to weight the mask down...but he doesn't say.

Also, I'd suggest not to use plastic to put the boiling water into.
Instead, much better to use pyrex glass or stainless steel to do the process.

Also, I think it's great that he reminds folks that these masks protect others from us,
rather than protecting us from others.

Frequently, it seems that most folks forget / don't know about / or don't understand this!

    Big Thanks for this again!

Re: How to Sterilize the N95 Mask at Home + How One Gets Infected

Many people have the virus / can spread the virus, but not have any symptoms!

Some experts are saying these folks with absolutely no symptoms, are spreading the virus, the most!

Also, some experts are saying that folks who have COVID, can be contagious after getting better ie., no longer having symptoms, contagious for 3 more weeks and more.

It returns in waves, including waves of exhaustion
    .

I heard an interview with people living in NYC, including someone with COVID and a doctor.

So, to answer your question, the importance of the mask is to prevent spreading the virus !

It sure makes sense to stay home as much as possible...

Re: How to Sterilize the N95 Mask at Home + How One Gets Infected

    the point is
the mask's purpose is to protect others
from the mask wearer possibly spreading the virus

    which is opposite
    of why we wear masks
to protect from smoke inhalation of wildfires

it is important to wear masks
to contain any possibility of each of us
    spreading the virus,
if we unknowingly are carrying it, symptom free at this point
or if one has any symptoms like coughing, sneezing, etc

The point for wearing the mask is so YOU don’t unintentionally spread the virus if you have been infected, particularly if you have no symptoms.

Re: How to Sterilize the N95 Mask at Home + How One Gets Infected

While I don't have the internet bandwidth to watch the video, I feel like there are several things I have to say about this thread...

First and foremost- given the shortages - N95 masks are NOT appropriate for the general public to be using. Any stockpile one had should have been donated to frontline medical professionals and first responders (and if supplies allowed "essential workers" in high contact with the public)

Second- a "N95 Mask" is *NOT* a face mask it is a respirator. There are (at least) 2 grades- medical and industrial. The Federal government weeks ago passed a rule to indemnify manufacturers or suppliers of the industrial grade masks from lawsuits - freeing up manufacturers to supply healthcare workers, and allowing everyone from construction companies, to companies like Apple and Facebook (who after the fires were required to stockpile masks for their workers) to donate them.

Unlike surgical masks, dust masks, etc- N95 masks *can* help prevent one from contracting cover-19, rather then simply reduce one spreading it like other face coverings.

Other things people need to think about...
First- N95 respirators require fitting and training to be effective - just search for OSHA (or CAL-OSHA) and N95 Masks,
Second- as with any respirator - they restrict breathing. And as such are *NOT* the wisest choice for most of the highest risk individuals.
Third- the downside of any "mask" is that people tend to regularly touch it to adjust it. This pretty much negates the point of the mask. Do a search on N95 masks or respirators with terms like "a clean room" or "biohazards".

Finally- actually reliable sources- from the CDC to SAGES, to 3M (one of the main manufacturers) all have info on reusing N95 masks. The overwhelming answer is don't bother trying. And the methods recommended for extreme situations in the medical world are generally out of the reach of the average person.

Re: How to Sterilize the N95 Mask at Home + How One Gets Infected

    Much appreciated

    what i am learning
is not to trust these video's
    because the deeper info
    which you have presented
is not known by the makers of these video's

one good thing about making these mistakes
is that it is bringing forth correct information and knowledge
which makes it all worth it.

    Thank you again~

Re:HEPA vacuum filter mask danger: someone please inform proponents of this

I'm feeling concerned about all the folks who will make the HEPA vacuum filter masks, not realizing the danger, including the doctor whose wife was sewing them--the video I saw about it.

It would be absolutely a kindness,
if someone would post/comment on these videos on UTube about using HEPA vacuum filters, so that the creators of the videos and those who view the video after us, will know about the dangers.

I'm not able to do that, and hadn't thought of it until now.

We could save lots of folks some serious injuries to their lungs, maybe save lives!

Hope someone who has ability to do so, takes a minute to do it!

Please post on wacco and let us all know if someone does.

I'm not sure whether I sent the link on wacco--
who was the link on wacco posted by ? or?

Let's take good care of each other--those posts were all meant to be helpful, by folks who care enough about others, to take the time to share their knowledge with others...

    Blessings of Kindness,
    Dusty

Re: How to Sterilize the N95 Mask at Home + How One Gets Infected

This still doesn't quite make sense to me.

When you exhale, you expel some virus toward other people, through the gaps around your mask.

But when you inhale, don't you inhale whatever viruses are in that surrounding air, through those same gaps?

Exhale, inhale--it's the same amount of air going through the same gaps. Is it not?

I would think that the purpose of the mask is simply to diminish the amount of air going in or out from a more or less forward direction, while filtering whatever air does move in or out through the front.

When you are coughing, of course, it's a great advantage to others not to have the forward blast travel far out ahead of you. But if you are only breathing, what's the difference?
