RE: the conspiracy theories around "Mayor Pete" and the Iowa caucus app / Shadow...

I follow news that's Tech/Science based more than politics. And the reporting Iand research 'm seeing - is that Pete's campaign paid $42.5K for text messaging software. As have a number of other candidates and/or democratic parties round the country.

He did NOT invest in the company. He did NOT help fund the app used by the Iowa DNC. His campaign did not contribute, financially or intellectually in any way to the app used by the Iowa DNC.

I'll go with the AP for now. (I'm not sure it's possible to link to the Slack discussions... and most of the tech news sites seem to be, ultimately, referencing what the AP is )

oh- and the (mis)quoted FEC fillings themselves. I didn't save the link... and I'm not gonna waste another hour of my life on government website bs.... but it's there to see if one wants to actually look...

All very funny, Ray! But a little question about that first one: aren't all the democracies of Europe, plus Canada, pretty much Democratic Socialist like Bernie?

To paraphrase --------- [quoted from Wikipedia "Social democracy" - Barry ]

According to both right-wing critics and supporters alike, policies such as universal healthcare and education are "pure Socialism" because they are opposed to "the hedonism of capitalist society". Partly because of this overlap, some political commentators use the term to refer to European socialism as represented by social democracy, especially in the United States. The difference between the two is that social democrats support practical, progressive reforms of capitalism and are more concerned to administrate and humanize it, with socialism relegated to the indefinite future, whereas democratic socialists ultimately want to go beyond mere social democratic reforms and advocate systematic transformation of the mode of production from capitalism to socialism.

Bernie likes to label himself as a Democratic Socialist because it sounds better (more salable).

Re: Best of Political Humor - February 2020

Huh? Let's make my question more specific. Don't the countries I mentioned have health care guaranteed for for all citizens regardless of income level? What about higher education? I'm really not sure, just putting the question out there.

I had always presumed that Bernie simply wanted to differentiate "democratic socialism" from the authoritarian so called "socialism" or "communism" we see in Russia and China. If it's "democratic," presumably that means the citizens have the power to make it be how they want it to be. No?

And "Democratic Socialist sounds better" than what?

Better than Socialist. So many flavors of Socialism. By way of illumination ------------

Social democracy has some significant overlap on practical policy positions with democratic socialism. Tony Blair affirmed his formal commitment to democratic socialism. He described it as a modernized form of social democracy which no longer commits the party to public ownership of industry and in its place advocates "the enterprise of the market and the rigour of competition" along with "high quality public services either owned by the public or accountable to them". Many social democrats "refer to themselves as socialists or democratic socialists" and some such as Blair "use or have used these terms interchangeably". Others preferred to describe their own political beliefs by using the term 'social democracy' only.

I was giving you the Readers Digest version. You really don't want to wade through wikipedia do you?
    What do you disagree with?

    Illumination 2.0 -----------

Different self-described socialists have used the term socialism to refer to different things such as an economic system, a type of society, a philosophical outlook, a collection of moral values and ideals, or even a certain kind of human character. Some definitions of socialism are very vague. Others are so specific that they only include a small minority of the things that have been described as socialism in the past. There have been numerous political movements which called themselves socialist under some definition of the term—some of these interpretations are mutually exclusive and all of them have generated debates over the true meaning of socialism.
Although they share a common root, schools of socialism are divided on many issues and sometimes there is a split within a school.
