Gas Station Proposal Updates for January 2020

    Hi Folks,
It's been a while. Happy New Year! Just want to give you a bit of an update for the new year and let you know that we are now battling four, count 'em, four gas station proposals in Sonoma County, described briefly below. The two in Santa Rosa both have well over ten operating gas stations within a 5-mile radius. There is no need for them! Please let me know if you would like to get involved. -Woody (woodyhastings [at] gmail dot com)

    1. 5300 Sebastopol Road, Sonoma County (Llano & Hwy 12) (95407)

    • We are still expecting this case to be heard next at the County's Board of Zoning Adjustments. We have been promised 30 day's notice

    2. 874 N. Wright Road, Santa Rosa (Wright Rd between Hwy 12 and Sebastopol Rd.) (95407)

    • About 12 of us attended a public hearing on December 12 of the SR Planning Commission's subdivision committee; the subcommittee approved the Parcel Map Waiver/Certificate of Compliance.
    • We have appealed the decision. We have been told it will take staff "some time" to produce a report, but that the case will next be heard at the full SR Planning Commission.

    3. 43 Middle Rincon Road, Santa Rosa (95409)

    • This is the most recent proposal that we have learned of. We found out about it at the Dec. 12 public hearing. More to come.

    4. Maria Drive & South McDowell Dr., Petaluma (Petaluma Safeway Gas)

    That's all for now!

Thanks for the update, Woody. It's been quite a while since we've heard anything about the one at Hiway 12, Llano Rd. Had hoped they'd given up. Sure hope we can keep it out of the Laguna.

So now we are fighting gas stations on principal?

Tell us all Woody - what car are you lucky enough to drive?

Re: Gas Station Proposal Updates for January 2020

    Hi Tommy,
    Thanks for the question.
The Coalition Opposing New Gas Stations is not fighting existing gas stations. We are opposing new applications for new gas stations in locations where there is no demonstrable need.
There are about 7 operating gas stations within a 5-mile radius of the 5300 Sebastopol Road proposal, and in the two Santa Rosa proposals, there are over 10 operating gas stations within a 5-mile radius.
The Petaluma Safeway Gas proposal is surrounded by gas stations and is very close to an elementary school and a day care center.
There are many reasons why new gas stations in 2020 are not a great idea, but most of our group share the concern that in the midst of a global climate crisis, we should not be adding fuel to the fire and building obsolete 20th century fossil fuel infrastructure.
It would be great to have you on board,
    Thanks again,
    -Woody

    PS, I drive a 2013 Chevy Volt
