Voice Your Concern about 100+ NEW Cell Antennas in County!

    Hi Friends,

Please read and forward this as widely as possible!

The Santa Rosa City Council will be hearing Public Comments this
TUESDAY, December 10th at 2:00 pm at the Council Chamber, 100 Santa Rosa Avenue, upstairs. There are applications pending in Santa Rosa for 100 plus cell towers.
    Please attend the study session.

Can you come? It's important to show up even if you still have questions and are not sure about the issue, or do not want to speak about adding cell phone and wireless infrastructure to Santa Rosa at this time.

Even if you can't come, please contact the Council members.
A template letter and addresses are included below.

Most of us in Sonoma County have a stake in what happens in Santa Rosa. If you have noticed a lot more funny looking cans and antennas around town than used to be there, you are right. There are 112 more of these contracted to be put into operation soon!

High-speed internet service and downloading can come from wired broadband and fiber optics cables, without filling our landscape with more cell-phone antennas and towers!

    REMEMBER!
Your voice is still important, even if you don't live in Santa Rosa, but work there, have friends there, send your kids to school or attend the JC, seek medical support, go to events, worship, shop, and eat dinner there!

    Thank you!
    Martha

If you cannot attend please send your comments to (copy and paste into an email):

Suggested template (adapt as you like)

Santa Rosa City Council and staff,

Protect public health, property values, street views, public safety, and the environment. Deny the 100 + "small cell" towers pending in Santa Rosa. These towers will greatly increase radio frequency radiation (RFR) in Santa Rosa neighborhoods, where people live, work, sleep and play. Peer-reviewed published science shows RFR harms people and nature. Children, the elderly, and those already ill are more vulnerable.

The harmful effects of RFR include: fatigue, headaches, sleep problems, anxiety, ringing in the ears, heart problems, learning and memory disorders, increased cancer risk, and more. The 30 million dollar, ten year US National Toxicology Program study found DNA damage and clear evidence of cancer and from exposure to RFR.

In 2018 Newsweek reported:"Technology is quite literally destroying nature, with a new report further confirming that electromagnetic radiation from power lines and cell towers can disorientate birds and insects and destroy plant health. The paper warns that as nations switch to 5G this threat could increase."

Peer-reviewed studies show worker bees did not return to their hives because of wireless radiation, which led to a colony collapse. Radiation impacts on wild birds documented nest abandonment, plumage deterioration and death. Lab studies of chick embryos documented heart attacks and death. In 2019 the Swiss environmental group Pro Natura reported 5G increases the body temperature of insects.

4G is the backbone for 5G. There is no scientific evidence to support any claim of 5G safety! Scientists and public health experts from around the world are calling for a moratorium on 5G.

The telecommunication industry's unbounded profit motive should never outweigh public and environmental safety.
Communications are faster, more reliable, and safer using wired and corded connections.

    Thank you for your consideration,
    [your name and address]

Santa Rosa to reconsider rollout of small-cell wireless technology
    WILL SCHMITT
    THE PRESS DEMOCRAT December 9, 2019, 5:23PM

Santa Rosa is gearing up to allow wireless companies to install antennas and wireless technology on city-owned utility poles, starting with a handful of so-called “small cell” sites in commercial areas across the city before expanding to residential neighborhoods.

The City Council is set to meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall to discuss potential small site installations by Verizon and AT&T, which wireless companies install to expand coverage and improve existing service. Many already have been installed in Santa Rosa on various PG&E poles, over which the city says it has no control.

The study session is meant to lay groundwork for new city rules governing small cells on Santa Rosa-owned light poles and traffic signals, where the city can decide whether to allow small cells, said Gabe Osburn, the city’s deputy director of development services. The hope is to try to find common ground among community concerns, telecommunications provider plans and council feedback to develop guidelines for cell site installations, he said, noting that “20 feet in front of someone’s house might not be the best location.”

“We’re going to focus more on those core concerns people had and look forward to a way to address those through a revision in the future of our telecommunications policy and the various ordinances that govern telecommunications here,” Osburn said.

The City Council in 2017 agreed to allow cell providers to put small cells on city-owned infrastructure but paused that rollout in 2018 after community members expressed concerns about aesthetics and questions about health effects.

It’s possible the city could decide to allow providers to use city-owned poles in exchange for an agreement not to install small cells a given distance from homes or other cellular facilities, but “we’re not right at that stage yet,” Osburn said. More clarity about when the City Council might act is expected after Tuesday’s discussion.

Verizon is currently the only wireless provider with small cell technology in Santa Rosa, with at least 31 active sites, according to city documents. A Verizon spokesperson did not respond Monday to a message seeking comment.

Opponents hope to use Tuesday’s public session to pressure Santa Rosa to limit the spread of wireless technology within city limits, curtailing especially the presence near residences and schools, said Alex Krohn, a physical therapist who runs a Santa Rosa-specific Facebook page dedicated to “informing people about the hazards of wireless microwave technology.”

“I hope that we can control the amount of power that the small cell facilities are emitting,” Krohn said. “I believe the antennas are way too powerful and way too low to the ground.”

We stayed for the first three hours of the meeting yesterday (the first hour and a half was given solely to promoters of the cell towers - after which everyone else had three minutes each (a loud buzzer would sound at three minutes). Many, many folks - Fifty? Sixty? - spoke out against this latest juggernaut, clearly and knowledgeably; two spoke for it (other than the two presenters, one of whom is a Verizon consultant, as an audience member pointed out.) And, one of the two who spoke in favor works for Verizon. Er; duh. If any Waccovian knows what the Council decided, after so much testimony, if they have decided anything, please share that info and thank you!

Unfortunately, this thread seems to reflect on western Sonoma County - who do nothing but complain, and are incapable of offering viable, realistic solutions. They offer half-baked, cost is no object solutions because they have absolutely no investment in solving the issue.

Respectfully, I disagree. Most folks at the meeting on Tuesday (including myself) live in Santa Rosa and have done our homework on this issue - as have scientists and doctors whose work was presented in opposition to the proposed proliferation of cell towers.

Enlighten me, what viable solutions did they offer to expand coverage so that people in the remote areas of Sonoma County can be warned of impending fires, without transmitting radio signals and irradiating the brains of the NIMBY crowd?
