The Sebastopol Center for the Arts presents Gary Weiner, with full band, celebrating the release of his first full length album, RELEASED AT LAST. The album will drop on May 27th, his 70th birthday. There may be cake.
A powerful vocalist, Gary reinterprets classic songs, giving them immediacy and new vitality. He describes this album as a “coming of (old) age story,” in which the songs progress from prophetic finger pointing towards an experience of release, and a settling in to one’s own life. The album shows influences that range from do wop to jazz and gospel, with a particular nod to Johnny Hartman, Tom Waits, Bobby Darin, Van Morrison and Bruce Springsteen.
"Gary is a belter, with the vocal vibrancy to raise the roof or the hair on your forearms, but what distinguishes this record is a whispery intimacy as Gary takes deep dives into familiar songs to find their core – the thing that makes them timeless rather than familiar."
– Howard Goodman, journalist
