    Law "enforcement" accountability

Sign the petition: The Justice Department must require police departments to accurately report civilian in-custody deaths and publicly share the data.

Police will continue to abuse their authority to enact racist violence on unarmed black, indigenous and other communities of color as long as they are allowed to do so with no accountability.

It is outrageous how many officers' murderous actions are ruled justifiable homicide. It is infuriating that the Justice Department, the highest law enforcement agency in the country, refuses to hold them to the bare minimum standard of reporting on the civilians who die in their custody. It is immoral that the DOJ hides what little data is available.

It's beyond time for state and local police departments to be held accountable for their crimes against civilians. Transparency is a MUST.

Remember Willie Lee Drumgo? In the '70's, he got drunk because he was so excited at his wife's having their first baby. Some brainless wonder reported a young, Black man to the Richmond police. They arrested him, and at the jail they started shoving him around. He was just drunk enough to be terrified by that and to be unable to come up with a workable response. He ran. The door toward which he was running was known to the police to be, not only locked, but electronically locked from another building. One or more cops plugged him in the back, and he died. At the hearing, the judge--despite being familiar with the door-locking setup, pretended to believe the cops when they said they had to shoot him to keep him from escaping.
