Did you know that ingredients listed on your pet food container may actually be different that they really are?

From TruthAboutPetFood:

A concerned veterinarian asked FDA in what time frame are manufacturers required to change pet food labels after an ingredient change. The FDA response is concerning.

A veterinarian was very concerned that pet food labels might not accurately disclose the exact ingredients used in the pet food. So…questions were sent to FDA asking the agency what is the required time frame a pet food manufacturer is required to change the ingredient listing on a pet food label AFTER an ingredient change has been made in the pet food?

The FDA responded with…

"Thank you for contacting FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM). In response to your below inquiry, firms should update labels as soon as practical. The FDA does not provide a set timeframe."

Sincerely,

CVM Compliance

In other words, the FDA has NO established requirement for pet food manufacturers to disclose to consumers an ingredient change was made in the food. “As soon as practical” could mean ANY time frame. A month, a year, 5 years…whatever is “practical” for that manufacturer.

FDA has NO concern for pet’s with allergy issues, food sensitivity issues. But they certainly work hard to protect the manufacturers.

If you have a pet with food sensitivity issues and you rely on commercial pet food, the only thing you can do is ask the manufacturer with each batch/package of pet food you purchase if the ingredients listed on the label are current. Ask this question BEFORE you feed the pet food.
