Plastic Free July In The Kitchen from Occupy Sonoma County

    Plastic Free in the Kitchen

    • Find your local Farmers Markets. Health Food stores have a bulk section so check these out too!

    • Avoid buying packaged processed food. For a sweet treat, go to a bakery and ask for a paper bag - or bring your own container.

    • Don't use a plastic bag to line your trashcan - use newspaper instead! Or keep it nude and simply rinse between uses.

    • Store fresh veggies and herbs in the fridge wrapped in a damp tea towel rather than plastic bags.
    • Take your own containers to the butcher, and if you'd like to freeze meat, wrap in baking paper and then foil to avoid freezer burn.

    • Go to "Living Plastic-Free" for more great ideas.

    • Go here for a list of recipes including nut milk, yogurt and crackers. For a quick cracker thinly slice a baguette/french stick and bake in the oven with some olive oil. Sometimes it takes longer to make things over buying packaged in plastic, but it often costs less, and is generally more healthy.

    • Store food in reusable plastic and glass containers, glass jars and metal tins. You can even freeze bread in clean pillowcases or cloth bags.

    • Sign up today to join Plastic Free July!

    • Check the Occupy Sonoma County Shopper's Guide for recommended cleaning products. We most highly recommend Dr. Bronner's.
