Support Science: become a School Board Member!

As a teacher and former school board member, I was excited to receive this email today. It makes so much sense and a great grass-roots way to make a difference!

    They’re calling it “academic freedom.”

In several states across the country, decision makers are trying to pass laws to allow schools to teach climate change or evolution as a scientific controversy -- or to refuse to teach them at all.

314 Action will fight that kind of legislation wherever it emerges, but there’s another way to make sure science gets taught appropriately to our children: by electing pro-science advocates to school boards across the country.

Science needs champions on our school boards -- if you know someone you think would be a great fit to run for school board, take a minute and nominate them today.

Or raise your hand to say you’ll consider running yourself.

A big part of 314 Action’s mission is to help these pro-science candidates every step of the way. We hold trainings, give them access to expert advice, and make it as easy as possible to take that step.

Here’s why these nominations matter: Most people tend to think they’re not qualified enough for public service. It doesn’t take much looking around at some of the people holding office to know that’s not true. (Cough...1600 Pennsylvania Avenue... cough.)

I’ve run for office twice, and I can tell you that hearing from a friend that you’d be good at public service is incredibly persuasive. The more we can get thoughtful, pro-science advocates to think seriously about running for school board, the better our chances that our children receive a real, science-friendly education.

Think about the people you know who fit the bill and make a nomination today. (Or say you’re interested in running yourself.)

Thanks for being a champion for science,

    Shaughnessy

I believe that school boards are the most important elected offices in our country today. Thanks for posting this.
