    Location:  Sebastopol
Car GPS bought about six years ago. Garmin. Isn't working right, can these be fixed? I hope it's not an electronic throwaway item....please advise.

More info would help. Is it simply not powering on? How is it powered (batteries, DC socket plug in, etc).

Most things that plug into a lighter or power port usually have a small Buss glass fuse either in the plug or in a holder inline somewhere. A simple fix.

If battery powered is there any evidence of corrosion or battery leakage?

Garmin has a pretty decent website where if you have the model and/or serial number you can find a lot of good info.

My gut feeling is if the issue is more serious then a simple power issue the repair costs may be greater then its value.

Finally, if it is dead please don't throw it in the trash. The Computer Recycling Center off Santa Rosa Ave should take. There are also numerous e-waste recycling events around the county- info can be found on the county waste site.
