TWO GREAT PLACES that help Sonoma County residents

Sometimes as I look around, and see so many who have unmet needs, so I wish that more people would volunteer even a couple hours a month. While I am going about my own business, I have found two GREAT places to do that, and one has been operating for over ten years, and one is very new to the area. Both are great places to shop even if you can't put in time helping out.

"THE LEGACY" is a store that takes donations of all things related to sewing and crafts involving yarns, and some collectibles. The staff is all volunteers except for a part-time manager, and ALL the funds go to support Sebastopol SENIOR CENTER. Legacy is a favorite place of most sewing people in our town, and has benefited people by helping them place useful items somewhere besides the landfill.

"THE LEGACY" is on Hwy. 116 South very near where it becomes a two way road, and is open usually 10-4 Tuesdays - Saturdays. You can find it easily, as it is located in the shopping center where there's a McDonald's.

The new place is amazing, even while not yet fully operating. What an innovative concept for providing help for those in need while recycling! The basic idea is: Accepting clean, store-ready donations of household items, staffing the thrift store with volunteers, and then using the proceeds to buy food, and feeding the hungry.

This is an idea of Elaine Neiswender, who is the volunteer manager of the Thrift Store which is also a Food Pantry, and an Emergency Services Office. Right now the Thrift Store is open only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, until there is more volunteer staff.

The place is called Love Your Neighbor https://celebratingjoy.com

    Here's what Elaine wrote:
    CELEBRATION, INC.
Celebration, Inc. is a new distinct 501 © 3 (Public Charity)

We, as Celebration, Inc., believe that the most basic human needs are to have a loving relationship with God each according to their own beliefs, with one’s own self, with others, and with all creation. When faced with life-threatening circumstances, there is a disrupting of each person’s sense of self and their identity. Our hope is to provide nurturing services to those in need with the expressed purpose of enabling them to remember who they are and to help to give them new hope and direction.

Our new organization intends to provide food for the hungry, comfort to the weary/lonely, and love to the un-loved, disabled and elderly. Most people wonder how they can make a difference in other people’s lives in a manner which is wholesome and significant in what precious little time they have in their lives beyond their own needs and direction. Becoming involved as a volunteer or as a financial contributor is one way to show that you also care.

This is much different than giving to something far away or remote. We plan on being very visible and are run by an all volunteer staff. We have already gotten the approval with the State of California and with the Federal Government to be a 501 © 3 Non-Profit Organization. Although we are not a religious or spiritual organization we feel it is important in being fully human to acknowledge that most individuals have some sort of beliefs that need to be acknowledged and respected.

We are opening our building at this time near the center of Graton hopefully by July 2006. Many are hungry and are in need of help in this community. With most of the local farmer’s lands being flooded and with many homes damaged by the recent flooding, this Emergency Service Office is needed! Our building will be a combination of a Food Pantry, a Thrift Store, an Emergency Services Office, A Community Education Facility, and A Community Garden.

We are accepting CLEAN ITEMS: Clothing, Household Necessities, Books, Magazines, Albums, etc. Please understand that we are run by ALL VOLUNTEERS and need to accept only things that are complete, freshly washed, and sellable. We will not be accepting furniture because of space limitations. We cannot accept large appliances other than a limited number of perfectly working refrigerators, a washing machine, an electric dryer, and freezers that we need to initially set up our pantry with.

We also need canned goods and food--fresh produce, boxed food, and kitchen items. You will receive a receipt either by hand or by mail.

Thank you for believing in what we are creating!” Elaine Neiswender
