Look What's Planned for Rohnert Park! An Upscale Downtown!

I came across this today on Nextdoor.com posted by someone in my neighborhood. The renderings look pretty nice, and have a kind of "upscale-downtown" look. Seems like this would raise property values in Rohnert Park, besides making use of the vacant previously State Farm property.

    Location: Rohnert Park, CA

Rohnert Crossings in Rohnert Park, California, is proposed to be a 30-acre pedestrian-friendly, mixed-use town center that will provide the start of a lively downtown district complete with a central town green in the heart of the community. The former State Farm property encompasses an entire city block and is located along Rohnert Park Expressway, and is across the street from the city library, police station and city center plaza. A future Sonoma-Marin Rail Transit (SMART) passenger train station is under construction along the eastern edge of the project, providing the basis for a transit-oriented development.

The site for Rohnert Crossings is well situated in the center of the City. It will be served by the new SMART commuter rail service, and the project will help create an exciting new downtown district that all Rohnert Park residents can enjoy. SunCal's development team is working in conjunction with the City's Priority Development Area (PDA) planning efforts that are already in motion to develop a vibrant community.

The SMART line will provide rail service along 70 miles of the historic Northwestern Pacific Railroad corridor, connecting urban and rural residents of Sonoma and Marin counties with jobs, education and health care services in the region. At the southern terminus, the trains will deliver commuters to the ferry terminal in Larkspur and connect with San Francisco. The Rohnert Park station is part of SMART's Phase 1 that is scheduled to start service in late 2015 or early 2016.

This has to be great news for the folks of Rohnert Park. While anything is an improvement over that endless strip mall of a town they have now, it'd be nice if they could create something that reflects more than just the optimal retail experience. With any luck, they'll be able to pull this off, and be able to draw people to something resembling a "civic center".

    Thanks for posting this, Shandi.
