Move to Amend Sonoma County meeting and Ballot Initiative update

Move to Amend Sonoma County would like to thank everyone who participated in our signature drive to qualify the Build Democracy, End Corporate Rule initiative for the November 2014 Sonoma County ballot. We deeply appreciate everyone who collected signatures, welcomed us to meetings, endorsed our campaign, contributed funds or spoken with friends, family, colleagues or students about the issues. Together we have made great strides in educating our community about the grave threat to our democracy posed by the Supreme Court's Citizens United and related decisions.

    BAD NEWS, GOOD NEWS
The difficult news is that we fell short of gathering enough signatures to automatically qualify our initiative for the Sonoma County ballot. The good news is that while discussing options for moving forward we learned of a new bill that is moving quickly through the California legislature. If passed, SB 1272 would place the following question on the November 2014 California ballot:

"Shall the Congress of the United States propose, and the California Legislature ratify, an amendment or amendments to the United States Constitution to overturn Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission (2010) 558 U.S. 310, and other applicable judicial precedents, to allow the full regulation or limitation of campaign contributions and spending, to ensure that all citizens, regardless of wealth, may express their views to one another, and to make clear that the rights protected by the United States Constitution are the rights of natural persons only?"

Move to Amend was not directly involved in SB 1272. We feel strongly that grassroots educating and organizing to collect signatures is the most effective means of ensuring an initiative will pass. Nonetheless, if this measure appears on the California ballot we certainly want it to pass. Please sign the petition in support of SB 1272 and share with your friends!

We are watching the progress of SB 1272 closely. If it does not make it onto the California ballot, we will proceed with our "Plan B" which is to ask the Board of Supervisors to place our initiative on the county ballot. We will back our request with the petitions we have collected to date. If you still have signed petitions in your possession please send them ASAP to MTASC, c/o L. Kenyon, 2605 Pomo Trail, Santa Rosa, CA 95403. Be sure to complete the Declaration of Circulation at the bottom of page 4 on each petition.

***** We are also pleased to announce that as of April Congressman Jared Huffman has become a co-sponsor of Move to Amend's We the People Amendment (House Joint Resolution 29)! *****

    ACTION NEEDED
The other big news is that this week the Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing “Examining a Constitutional Amendment to Restore Democracy to the American People.” Senate Joint Resolution 19 is a Constitutional Amendment proposal put forward by the Democratic Party leadership. The amendment would give Congress and the States authority to regulate campaign spending, but does not directly address corporate personhood. Move to Amend has started a new petition asking the co-sponsors of SJR 19 to include the following language in this bill:

"The rights protected by the Constitution of the United States are the rights of natural persons only. Artificial entities established by the laws of any State, the United States, or any foreign state shall have no rights under this Constitution and are subject to regulation by the People, through Federal, State, or local law. The privileges of artificial entities shall be determined by the People, through Federal, State, or local law, and shall not be construed to be inherent or inalienable."

Please sign and share this new petition now!
