Re: One Out-of-the-Box Solution - CalExit!
Didn't we already have a tragic and bloody civil war over the secession of the Southern States? The American Civil War 1861-1865?
I don't understand how the secession of California can be legal if the Confederacy was not able to get away with it. Can someone please explain this to me?
Thank you,
Edward
Re: One Out-of-the-Box Solution - CalExit!
To my understanding, the first part of the effort is to forward a state-wide ballot initiative that proposes to change the Constitution of CA (not the US) to state that CA is not an inseparable part of the US.
According to a call I listened in on, a new country is created somewhere in the world approx. every 2 years. There are plenty of international precedents. To quote Garrison Keillor in a humorous piece in the Washington Post:
"This is not that hard, people. Others have done it. Pakistan split from India, Norway from Denmark, Lennon left McCartney."
Scotland also split from the UK not that long ago.
You can read about the CA National Party's platform here:

The platform sounds pretty amazing - an opportunity to be the change we want to be in the world on an unprecedented scale, while not subsidizing Monsanto-driven mid-west BigAg, US military aggression, not accepting a racist Attorney General, not subsidizing fundamentalist red states, doing away with privately owned prisons for profit, etc etc.
And for a bit of levity, you can read Garrison Keillor's opinion that it's time for Post-Trump America to divide:
