Thank you everyone for your help! I think it is indeed a chestnut tree!
If you want to see exactly what an American chestnut tree leaf etc. looks like, there is a small bushy one in the little rose garden along Mendocino Avenue at the JC near Elliot. It was labeled as a sapling so I know for sure.
Now, I'm not positive which type of chestnut this next one is but I've always thought it was an American Chestnut. Check out the incredible spreading chestnut tree on the front lawn of the SR High School south of the JC, again on Mendocino Ave.
I love this tree and admire it every time I pass it.
Go sit "under the spreading chestnut tree". It's a beaut and very distinctive.
There are many chestnuts (and hybrids) at the Gold Ridge Farms gardens.
While we are on the subject of trees I have a question about Santa Rosa's Cedars of Lebanon. There was the fantastic one that Luther Burbank and his wife and doctor friend were planted under at the little house and gardens across from Julliard Park. It was deemed unsafe by the SR aborists and was cut down because of "root rot". When cut down, no rot was found, according to the PD. ( That cedar was the #1 landmark for me to show visitors to our area.)
Santa Rosa just can't cut its heritage trees down fast enough. How about that splendor, the huge Valley Oak, just north of Enterprise rental west of 101? Was anyone else shocked that they cut that one down when they put in the apartments? There certainly was room for it as it was to the side of the building. It has been replaced with a few saplings. Gee, that's nice. Wait, let me guess, it had root rot?? But I digress...
There was mention in an article on Burbank's Cedar of Lebanon (by Gaye LeBaron) that there were others planted in SR during the same time period and at least one surviving tree at the time of the article. Anybody know where? I vaguely remember the MacDonald district (?).
I miss that splendid tree so much, but I'd love to see another one.
