Jon Stewart's take on the Food Safety Bill
https://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/w...d-and-the-ugly
I thought the Jon Stewart video regarding this legislation was incredibly simplistic. He carefully avoided going into any actual concerns that regular people have about the bill, and instead focused on sensationalist remarks by Glenn Beck. The real problem with this bill is that it treats small farms that direct-market their products to the local community the same as large agribusiness corporations and food processors (who, incidentally, are the ones causing the vast majority of the outbreaks of food-borne illness). It creates more burdensome regulations that small farmers must struggle to comply with, while the large producers have no trouble complying because they are generally national or multi-national corporations with far more resources at their disposal.
The other issue with this bill is that it gives the FDA a large increase in their power and authority. The FDA has repeatedly shown that they are NOT working in the interests of public safety. Rather, they are concerned with preserving the profits of pharmaceutical and agribusiness corporations. Many people who work for the FDA have serious conflicts of interest, and it shows in the way they operate. They have harassed companies who attempt to inform their customers of government-funded scientific research indicating health benefits for such natural foods as cherries and walnuts. They have raided small Amish family farms and seized or destroyed their products in attempts to put these farms out of business. They oppose the consumer's right to have access to raw milk. On the pharmaceutical end of the spectrum, they have either approved or failed to withdraw from the market in a timely manner drugs that they knew were dangerous.
I was going to post lists of organizations that support and oppose S.510 so that readers could decide for themselves. However, it has now come to my attention that many of the large food processing companies have removed their names from the supporting list on govtrack.us! I checked this list just a few days ago and it included many companies like General Mills and Kraft, and organizations such as the American Frozen Food Institute. Whether this is due to the bill passing the Senate or because of increased public scrutiny on this issue, I can't say. I can say that it doesn't make sense for such companies to support increased regulations on their own industry, especially when they are the ones posing the largest public health threat, unless they already know that the regulations will not be applied equally to all concerned. I think it is very safe to say that with the FDA's track record, these regulations will come down harshly on small producers while large corporations will be nearly immune.
The true answers to our food safety issues are to increase public awareness about the dangers of industrially-processed foods, and about the benefits of buying fresh locally-grown foods directly from the farmer. When you buy your foods from local farms, you can act as your own inspector! You can visit the farm yourself and see how the food is grown and the animals are raised, and decide for yourself whether they meet your standards for food safety. Direct-marketing farms are aware that their reputation in their community is on the line, and tend to have far better standards than huge food-processing plants. Furthermore, by buying direct you are supporting sustainable agriculture and keeping money in the local community. And best of all, you will be supporting your own health and well-being by eating real foods instead of industrially-processed food-like products that are often little more than byproducts of other industries.
