Hate to put these encyclopedias in the paper recycling bin, but I'm not even sure it's a complete set, and it would cost too much to ship them to a faraway school. I'm sure the library has no use for them.
Anyone have any ideas?

Try Sonoma County Homeschoolers: https://www.schnonprofit.org/contact.html
You could list your encyclopedias on the various local Freecycle lists, or on Craigslist in the "free" category.
You can carve out the centers of the pages and use or sell them as hiding place.
Children nowadays will never reach for a paper encyclopedia.
Other creative projects...book as medium for art.
the clay on the glossy pages could be good for pondliner or small dam or swale building?
paper mache?
Looks like The Global Book Exchange in San Rafael is only accepting World Book encyclopedias.

If they are World Book you might consider them.
This is a highly original and beautiful use of old books.
