Want to create Seb-based tool library and wood shop?
I think Sebastopol could really use a tool-lending library and community work/wood shop. I'm a builder who would be willing to manage it and I know there is demand for something like this. But how to finance the rent for the space? Donations and memberships? Anyone have ideas?
Re: Want to create Seb-based tool library and wood shop?
Hi,
I have wanted to start a community studio for a long time. I was thinking of jewelry-making tools, wood working tools, stone carving tools, etc. My thought was to have memberships and classes. Have you heard of Studio One in Berkeley? It is a community art center that mostly has classes. But, you can also rent time in the jewelry studio. It was really nice to have access to something like that. If I can be of help, I'd love to get involved in creating something like this.

I know the Chimera peeps and it looks like their trying to get a good thing happening, but... I haven't seen much progress and I would like to see this actually get done!

I have been using the Santa Rosa tool library for years. I'd love for there to be one in Sebastopol. If you are serious about starting one, you should contact Dustin at https://borrowtools.org/
I am sure he'd be happy to share his wisdom with you.

How nice it could look if it was built on wheels, with flip down work benches for spot projects
tools were family members and treated as such.
yes?
for those tools that were needed in other places brings up the formation of a new oath I think

yes/no ?
Re: Want to create Seb-based tool library and wood shop?
I have a utility bed trailer and some tools to help get you started.
Re: Want to create Seb-based tool library and wood shop?
Thank you for the input everyone! I'm meeting with Dustin from the SR tool library this Saturday. Will give you an update afterward.
I've also considered a mobile workshop on wheels. I've built 3 tiny houses on wheels thus far and have come up with some good designs for mobile workshops too.

Being a long retired carpenter, I could donate some tools.

I can donate some tools as well. Let me know when you're ready.
Re: Want to create Seb-based tool library and wood shop?
So, I talked with Dustin (from the SR Tool Library) over the weekend and got a lot of good advice. Before moving forward, I would like to find a few others who would be interested in volunteering as staff and helping make this happen. We would need to decide what day/hours the library would be open and who can be on duty during those times. Maybe 3 days/week, from 4-7PM, for example? I am proposing that we use a shipping container as the library and have it in downtown Sebastopol. The container would ideally be 30-40 feet long and would have a small office in there for the staff. I am talking with a owner of a space across from Community Market and will let you know if that's a possibility.
Re: Want to create Seb-based tool library and wood shop?
I would be very happy to volunteer. I think this is a wonderful project for Sebastopol. I like the idea of a storage container to contain the inventory.
I have lots of time and would love to spend it working on a way to allow all of us to borrow the tools that we need. I can't afford to buy tools and I am sure I am not the only one in Sebastopol.
I am a retired computer information person (lots of experience) and can help with database work and setting up a website.
We should also look into grants, etc. to get started.
Thank you for applying Santa Rosa's good idea to our local area...makes it a great idea.
Re: Want to create Seb-based tool library and wood shop?
Have you researched the liability insurance this operation will require. Perhaps Dustin had advice. This will probably be a big expense...
I would be willing to volunteer some of my time to get this up and running.
Good luck!
Keith

We've created a google group to continue the discussion about making the Sebastopol tool library a reality. All interested parties are encouraged to sign up to the group:

After signing up, you can participate on the group forum, or, you can participate through email. It's easy.

If you can secure the donation of a Tractor trailer type trailer,It is not prohibitively expensive to rent in with Chimerra and share (Possibly) their considerable tool resources.
I also have MANY tools and almost a full Hardware shop I would gladly exchange for help getting my (("UPCYCLE ARTS SEBASTOPOL")) shop set up there, looking for an old Bekins Trailer myself to this end.
I do Tile Ceramics,Cement sculpture COB Natural building,Masonry, Fountains Grey water systems, Rain water catchment and filtration. Composting systems of all kinds. Natural insulation project. etc etc.
Love this Idea - break the "china Habit"!! Learn to MAKE your own and have fun rockin' it I'm in.
