Gift for 6 year old boy?

I bought a Lightning McQueen car (from the Cars movie by Pixar) for my nephew's 6 year old boy. I floated the idea by asking him what he thought about Lightning McQueen. He replied vehemently in his wavery little boy voice, "Lightning McQueen is for LIDDAL KIDS!"

So 3 year old will get the car. What's a good gift for a six year old boy? He loves sports. Hopefully something small-ish - because they are moving to Germany next year to be with my nephew's wife's family next year. :( We will miss them terribly! Fortunately my other nephew just had a baby boy 4 months ago and has just moved back from DC to be near family!

A ball or balls. Soccer ball. baseball, football, etc. Legos are always a hit as well!

I saw a wonderful do it yourself project: ...Life size Lincoln Logs made out of pool noodles~ 15 pool noodles from the dollar store, cut in half, cut notches out easily, with scissors = hours and hours of fun playtime

I just gave my 6-year-old nephew a wooden birdfeeder kit that includes paints as well and is very simple to build either with a parent or older sibling. I included a little birdfeed and a cake of suet. He loved it, as did his mother, who will build it with him as a lovely parent-child activity.

Perhaps he would enjoy an activity with you, a joint learning experience, a hike, a trip to Bodega Head or Armstrong Woods . . .

Magnets! My nephew loved them when he was little. For a 6-year old, look for the larger horseshoe kind, probably from the toy store.

As he gets older, you can have fun giving him different kinds - super magnets are really fun! I'm 52 and I still love magnets : )
