How can I get cat piss out of the carpet?
Also, how can I stop her from doing that? She used to let me know whenever she needed to be let out to go peepee or poopoo, but when I went away for a week's vacation about 3 months ago, she started peeing and pooping in the house; maybe she was upset that I'd left, but she's never done that before when I've been gone. I thought she'd finally gotten back to her normal behavior, but she did it again the other night, when I was in the next room and she could easily have gotten me to let her out. Any advice from you critter experts?
Thanks!

Have you made sure she doesn't have an infection of some sort? She may be trying to let you know she has one. Good luck. Gail
Oh dear, getting cat piss out of the rug is a challenge. But, there is a product called Nature's Miracle Stain and Odor Remover that does a pretty good job. You will need to soak the whole area where the pee is -- all the way down to the floor, through any pads that might be there -- and then let it dry up. It does some sort of biodegrading on the pee.
The biggest problem seems to be that if there is any residual smell of pee on the rug, that is where the cat will return to pee the next time there is any issue at all. I just finally had to remove a rug that had never quite recovered and seemed to attract every accident to it. Boo Hoooo....
Good luck. By the way, I have heard that if you have any doubts as to where the pee is (and if it maybe lurks in areas that you don't know about for sure) that you can get a black light and it will illuminate the areas that are peed upon.
By the way the Nature's Miracle is available in most pet stores, at Western Farms, etc.
And again: good luck. It's no fun having to hate the same critters we love to love....

This situation might be worse than you think. We bought a fixer in Guerneville. It had a distinctive cat pee odor in a corner of the great room. Two professional cleanings didn't work. Removing 800 square feet of wall-to-wall carpeting didn't work. Removing the padding didn't work. What finally solved the problem was replacing a portion of the subfloor and painting the surrounding area!

1.) Remove and dispose of the carpet and pad (sorry)
2.) Bleach the subfloor to kill the bacteria (the source of the odor)
3.) Install new carpet and pad.

How can I get cat piss out of the carpet? Pet stores sell an enzyme spray that denatures organic matter so that even a cat can't smell it; as long as she can smell it, she'll keep peeing there.
Also, how can I stop her from doing that? She used to let me know whenever she needed to be let out to go peepee or poopoo, but when I went away for a week's vacation about 3 months ago, she started peeing and pooping in the house; Not unusual timing. she did it again the other night, when I was in the next room and she could easily have gotten me to let her out. Any advice from you critter experts? Does she not have a litter box? If not, what does she do when it rains? Even if she has a roofed place to go outdoors, she needs a litter box, and it needs to be kept clean. When you first bring it in, set her in it and dig at the litter a bit yourself, to give her the idea. If she pees or poops on any kind of schedule, put her in the litter box when it's about time for her to need it. Tell her how proud you are of her for using it.
Thanks!

Hi Dixon, It's not uncommon for pets to do this as they often get freaked out when their routine in upset and owners are gone. I have had reports from several customers that the AirSource does a great job removing pee smell from carpets. I had an area rug which our cats peed on when we moved into a new house that I washed 10X with everything imaginable, and then after I got my Airsource I tried it and the smell was gone in less than a day. Call if you want a free trial or to rent one. Melissa Weaver, Enhanced Health Systems, 823-3235

Something else to consider (after ruling out infection with a trip to the vet) is if there could be anthing outside threatening your cat - like another cat or dogr owildlife. It may not want to go out. Try a cat litter box to save your carpet while you figure it out. good luck!
