This was decided after ongoing discussion during the last few months worth of GAs. This is not the end of Occupy in Sebastopol, but the beginning of a new phase. On Tuesday, this statement from OS GA was read to the city council, alerting them of our plans. We hope to work with the city to create a permanent meeting space conducive to holding GAs in place of the tent. Our next GA will be this Sun at 3pm

OCCUPY SEBASTOPOL STATEMENT MARCH 5, 2013

Occupy Sebastopol will remove the Occupy Information Tent from the Mario Savio Plaza on or before April 8, 2013.

Occupy Sebastopol wishes to express gratitude to The current City Council and Staff and to former Council members Guy Wilson and Kathleen Schaffer.

Occupy Sebastopol also wishes to gratefully acknowledge the support and cooperation of Chief Weaver and the Sebastopol Police Department, Richard, Dante and the Department of Public Works and most importantly, The Community of Sebastopol.

Occupy Sebastopol will restore the grass around the tent site at no cost to The City and assist in any other plans The City has for the Occupy Tent area.

Occupy Sebastopol would like to partner with The City to create an area conducive to general assembly meetings to fill the vacuum created by the removal of The Occupy Tent.

Occupy Sebastopol will continue to hold General Assemblies on Sundays at 3pm, a practice it has carried on for the past 16 months.

Occupy Sebastopol hopes to survive the removal of the Occupy Tent and to continue to fight the "never ending battle for Truth, Justice, and The American Way."

For those wanting more information on this matter, Sonoma West Times and News has a front page article this week (https://www.sonomawest.com/sonoma_west_times_and_news/news/occupy-sebastopol-tent-to-come-down/article_8f8ecaaa-8698-11e2-926d-0019bb2963f4.html). As indicated below, taking down the tent does not mean that Occupy is going away. It is just evolving its tactics and entering "a new phase." People will still gather in the area where the tent was and exercise our freedom of speech. Please join us there at the spot where Occupy Sebastopol may have had the longest standing Occupy Wall Street tent in the U.S., something our entire town can be proud of.

I personally will miss the tent. However, I am glad to hear that you will continue to fight the "never ending battle for truth, justice and the American Way." Don't go away; we need you. And thank you for keeping the tent neat, clean and attractive for all these months!

Thank you sebastacat.

It was definitely a very difficult decision, but it became clear that although we have wide support in the community and are able to get high levels of participation for actions and events, we are not able to keep the tent staffed regularly. Most people felt that if we kept the tent, it should be open more than just Sundays before and after GA. While we have lots of supporters and members, there are relatively few people dedicated to organizing and keeping the day to day functions of OS running. Most felt that energy would be better spent working on the actual issues instead of attempting to keep the tent. It was and is a beautiful symbol of success and resistance and it will certainly be missed.
