The gist is in the quote below:

Subject: Will the zipper on your new pants be radioactive?

Hi,

US Dept of Energy Secretary, Steven Chu, plans to dump 14,000 tons of radioactive scrap metal into the marketplace for use in the manufacturing of consumer products, such as zippers, belt buckles, eyeglass frames, jewelry, watches, silverware, toys, pet bowls and leashes. This action is being fast-tracked, with little regard for public comment. The deadline is February 11, 2013.

That's why I signed a petition to Secretary Steven Chu, US Department of Energy, which says:

"STOP DEPT OF ENERGY PLANS to dump 14,000 tons of radioactive scrap metals into the manufacturing of consumer products. There is no safe level of radiation. Keep nuclear waste out of my home and workplace!"

I wrote this following set of question and statements in the comment box provided on the petition signing page:

It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when and how much of the radioactive contamination in scrap metals and other materials already have or will end up in our consumer products.
Maybe there already has been radioactive contamination in our consumer products and we just haven't been made aware of it as of yet.

Could it be that radioactive contamination in our consumer products are at least in part responsible for the rise in the US and world cancer rate?

There have been some records of sorts that have been kept on the topic which are not limited to the US EPA, one can be found at this website URL:
