Vancouver intactivists led by performance artist Glen Callender, founder of Canadian Foreskin Awareness Project (CAN-FAP), protested Oprah Winfrey's appearance at Rogers Area on January 24, 2013.

OPRAH WINFREY'S DOUBLE STANDARD ON CIRCUMCISION


Dear Oprah Winfrey: As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and a high-profile opponent of female circumcision (aka female genital mutilation), it is deplorable that you use and promote SkinMedica, an anti-wrinkle cream produced with tissues removed during the forced circumcision (aka male genital mutilation) of male infants.

If girls have a right to grow up with whole genitals and decide for themselves if any parts of their body get cut off, then so do boys and intersex children. This is basic equality, and basic human rights. Wake up, Oprah! His penis, his choice!

OPRAH WINFREY, THESE ARE OUR DEMANDS:

1) Stop using SkinMedica products. Foreskins belong on boys, not in cosmetic products.

2) Retract your endorsement of SkinMedica, and require products you use or endorse to be produced from ethically-sourced materials,

3) Champion the fundamental human right of all children - male, female and intersex - to grow up with whole genitals. The fight over a boy's right to keep his foreskin will be a defining social conflict of this century. Please be on the right side of history from now on...the children of the future will thank you for it!

The phrase "female circumcision" is a misleading misnomer. What is called female circumcision is in fact clitoridectomy, which means that the clitoris is cut off.

What is referred to as male circumcision entails cutting off all or part of the foreskin or prepuce, which corresponds anatomically to the hood that enshrouds the clitoris.

Male circumcision would cease immediately if the glans or head, which corresponds anatomically to the clitoris, were cut off.

Re: the term "female circumcision": what you describe is commonly-held disinformation that has been actively marketed by those with financial and/or psychological motivations to create a false dichotomy between male and female genital cutting. You can probably guess W.H.O. is behind this disinformation campaign.

While the direct translation of the word "circumcision" is indeed "to cut around," the usual usage in English-speaking countries is "removal of the prepuce (foreskin)." It can and does refer to removal of the prepuce penis or the prepuce clitoris (aka the clitoral hood), which are anatomical homologues arising from the same part in the embryo (https://www.drmomma.org/2010/06/fgmmgm-similar-attitudes-misconceptions.html). Clitorectomy (cutting out the clitoris) is not the typical genital cutting done on girls. Usually what is done is removal of the prepuce clitoris, aka circumcision. Often the tip of the clitoris is snipped off too. Sometimes lopping off some or all of the labia minora is added to the mix.
