Dog Drones: Are Canine Robots The Future Of Warfare?

Downloaded January 10, 2013 from https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/09/dog-drones-are-canine-rob_n_2441330.html

Drones have changed the way militaries engage in modern-day wars, but a new technological development in robotics may drastically alter how we think about drones. DARPA, the arm of the U.S. Department of Defense in charge of military technology, has developed what might be the military man's new best friend: a robot dog that can run faster than Usain Bolt, follow its leader, and respond to commands. The LS3, or "Alphadog" as it's called, is so lifelike, that it can catch itself slipping on ice. As a December CNET story (https://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-57560357-1/darpas-latest-footage-of-ls3-robodog-astounds/) described the robodog: "The four-legged wonder, capable of carrying 400 pounds, easily navigates streams, ditches, and other challenging environments."

"Cry 'Havoc' and slip the dogs of war." Antony in "Julius Caesar"

Be afraid, human beings, be very, very afraid. Machine evolution facilitated by human beings and driven by profit motive has been steadily advancing since Watt's steam engine in 1765 improved on the Newcomen device.

Darwin's survival of the fittest required eons to progress from single-celled organisms to Homo (not very) sapiens. It's taken only 248 years for human-facilitated evolution to move from the primitive steam engine to these dogs of war. Researchers in artificial intelligence are working on a self-aware, autonomously functioning robot. The Pentagon wants autonomous drones capable of selecting and destroying targets. Would you like to meet one of these Dogs of War that was autonomous? You think a K-9 or a pit bull is unpleasant!

Be afraid, humans. Be very, very afraid. Of course, as machines have taken over more and more formerly human cognitive functions, humans have dumbed down. The U.S. Congress is a case in point and so is the NRA and so is the Republican party.

I doubt that we humans will have any chance whatsoever against these machines on the apocalyptic landscape. Homo sapiens indeed! More like Homo imprudens, the species that could not foresee the consequences of its actions.
