I want to be clear that I am not disparaging any veterinarian here; I simply want to insure that my dog is getting the best care I can possibly afford.

Reaching out to all you local folk requesting feedback on local veterinarians. Asking on behalf of an 8 year old male Maltese/Yorkie dog with a wide variety of skin problems.
He has being seen by Dr Reif in Cotati but i am not 100% satisfied with my dogs progress. Ideally seeking information on low cost and/or in home treatment options. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for information on a dog insurance plan. Would like feed back on what doggie people feel is the most thorough/affordable plan and if any of these plans are actually worth purchasing. Especially interested in getting a firm diagnoses on what skin problems my dog actually has. There is a highly recommended Dermatologist in Petaluma but is $140 just for the initial exam and at this time I have limited resources.

Please reply publicly for the benefit of the community and Thank you to all of you that have replied. It is greatly appreciated.

I don't know about skin problems, but Dr. Waldo is a fabulous vet. Check him out on YELP and you'll see he has one of the highest ratings.

I have not had success in treating my cavalier king charles spaniel rescue dog for her skin problems at the vet. Usually antibiotics are prescribed for secondary infection and steroids come soon after that. They have dastardly side effects and cumulative damages.
After assuring that fleas or parasites are not the cause, the next thing that comes up is food allergies, In order to ascertain which food is the culprit, one removes all foods to which animal has been exposed and feeds something to which the dog has not had a chance to develop an allergy. One needs a food with a single protein source and no grain. I used fish and sweet potato food whose name I do not remember, and fed it to her for about a year to see if she cleared. She did to a degree so I knew that at least a part of the problem was food allergies. We continue to eat grain free diet. Then there are the environmental allergens, which could be flowering trees and plants or something used in the home. I discovered that my dog reacts to fabric softener and to scents in the laundry soap!
We employ herbs called skin-eeze from allergic pet, along with some other of their products. There is herbal shampoo that gets rid of any fungal problems that may exist and is very soothing as well as repellant to fleas. That needed to be done three days in a row minimally. Then there is the topical spray for any spots that develop if she starts to chew on herself. Many dogs with skin problems also have funky ears chronically. We have oil drops to instill in there, after washing them out periodically.
Nothing works 100%, this plan is the best I have come up with thus far.
When we need it we use antihistamines as well. Chloraphenarimene-generic chlortrimeton was initially prescribed by a vet for a fairly large amount of money for a few pills. I have since found the exact item on line and purchased 1000 for $8. She can have 4 mg. three time a day. Good luck. I know I felt like a horribly inadequate pet parent before getting to solution.
