I signed a petition to Debra Bowen, California Secretary of State which says:
"We petition Debra Bowen, Secretary of State of California, to require ALL votes cast in the November 6 election be counted immediately. We specifically demand that ALL ballots in the following counties be counted and recorded: Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, and Santa Clara. We demand that the results of this complete ballot counting be made public immediately."
This is an excerpt taken from the carighttoknow.org website…
“Leading consumer groups revealed a long list of documented deceptions of the No on 37 Campaign, including blatant misrepresentation of the positions of leading science, professional, academic organizations and government agencies as documented below. This pattern of fraud tells the true story about how far the world's largest pesticide and junk food companies are willing to go to keep American consumers from having a choice about genetically engineered foods. Opponents of Prop 37 have been caught red handed:”
And here's an excellent article about how the No on 37 campaign could have fought Monsanto and friends more effectively. Very astute.

The petition was removed because it was not needed.
Since people heard that not all the votes have been counted yet in densely populated areas, mostly in Southern California, some of them jumped to the false conclusion that this was some vast conspiracy meant to thwart the will of the people and make sure that GMO foods were not labeled. Unfortunately, no one stopped long enough to do research about vote counting until after the petition went up.
Let me explain: in every election, it takes several weeks to count all the provisional and absentee ballots. These ballots are not counted the way that votes cast at a polling place are counted. The reason for this is that the signatures on the security envelopes have to be matched with the one on record at the county clerk's office and the ballots have to be compared to other polling places to make sure that no one voted twice. Sometimes people get an absentee or vote by mail ballot, fill it out, mail it and then forget or get confused about whether or not they voted. Sometimes they change their minds about how they want to vote. They then go to their polling place on election day and the clerks give them a provisional ballot so that they can vote.
Unfortunately, in the last 4 years we've seen many state services lose their funding and because of this, there are simply not enough paid folks to count ballots as there were before. On top of that, there are more voters than there were in 2008. These offices all around the state are operating with skeleton crews. They are already under enough pressure to finish the job: we certainly should not be applying even more pressure on them.
I'd like to see us slow down and take a deep breath and let the county clerks and their staffs do their job. Yes, I would very much love to see Prop 37 win; I've been working on this campaign since last year and was the Santa Rosa coordinator the last 3 months. I know the campaign leaders and they all agree that we need to leave these workers alone and let them do their jobs without pushy demands for "results NOW!"
The internal and exit polling at these polling places were pretty negative towards Prop 37, so even though we have our hopes up, we're prepared for the loss too. We're not giving up, though, and we want people to get involved with the national campaign to get GMOs labeled. www.justlabelit.org. There is a meeting planned for early December to discuss what the next steps are and after the holidays are over, we'll be right back out there educating folks and working for labeling. Please consider joining us!
