I worked for 35 years with, as it was called then, the anti-FGM campaign, and i see no reason to mutilate anyone's external genitalia even to the extent of actual circumcision. (What's usually euphemised as "female circumcision" is actually complete excision of the clitoris and often much surrounding tissue.) The contemporary expression replacing "Female Genital Mutilation" is "Female Genital Cutting," since African womyn understandably don't like hearing their genitals referred to as "mutilated." I had a friend who did his Conscientious Objector alternative service in a hospital; he told me the staff claimed baby boys didn't feel the circumcision and he said, "Then why do they scream their heads off?" I suppose the death threat may have come from someone who felt the nurse was interfering with their Jewish or Muslim religious practice. To that objection, all i can say is "Tough! That's what comes of worshiping an entity that demands child abuse."
