The current law in Sonoma County limits households to four dogs and/or four cats. They change it by circumstance. However if you are keeping fewer than four dogs or cats in neglectful, inhumane conditions, it's not against the law. Please let Animal Control and especially Efrin Carrillo know that while it can be a problem if people have too many animals, the law should be about the condition of the animals first. Responsible rescuers who have more than four animals in excellent conditions are being harassed.

We heartily agree with this statement and propose that it is taken a step further. Let's remove the number of pets from the equation. If we were to look at each situation and judge it on its merits, many more people would come to know how to best care for their pets, while those who engage in rescuing abused and/or unwanted critters would be able to function without the burden of institutionalized fear. We would all be held to the same standard of basic care. Keep in mind that the ideal dog pack size is 8. If we're going to institutionalize standards of care, how about we take into consideration how they're designed live? The call to judge situations on their merits requires that the people who perform the assessments know something about the critters they're looking at. Wouldn't that be a refreshing change?

Can you show us where in the zoning guide for the County this is shown?
Or is this inside city limits? Here's the info for example on Sonoma County Rural Residential properties - a 'pet fancier' license is available for example which would cover a larger number of dogs/cats (I would assume). I have neighbors with kennels - generally never a problem - although you do know when they are being fed... :-)
