Some (most?) of you may already know this, but I didn't. So in case anyone else missed it, the CPUC made its final ruling re: smart meters and opting out on February 1, 2012. Here's the link:

“Opting-Out” – Requesting to Not Have a Smart Meter

On April 19, 2012, the CPUC approved analog meter options for SCE and SDG&E customers. Read our press release (https://docs.cpuc.ca.gov/PUBLISHED/NEWS_RELEASE/164434.htm).
On Feb. 1, 2012, the CPUC approved analog meters for PG&E customers electing to opt-out of Smart Meter service. Read our press release (https://docs.cpuc.ca.gov/PUBLISHED/NEWS_RELEASE/158621.htm).
Sept. 14, 2011: Public Workshop on Opt-Out Requests, CPUC Auditorium (https://ia.cpuc.ca.gov/eventscalendar/DisplayEvent.asp?ReturnPage=default.asp&ReturnMonth=9&ReturnYear=2011&ID=690)

Workshop agenda (https://www.cpuc.ca.gov/NR/rdonlyres/B886E124-D26E-4473-91BB-811F3279AA91/0/SmartMeter091411WorkshopAgendaREVISED.pdf)

I deeply resent having to pay to "opt out" of something I never "opted in" for, and that I believe is a health hazard. It looks like I do, though, at least for now, since I really can't afford to refuse payment and have my electricity cut off. (The person I spoke to at PG&E this morning told me that's what would happen.)

Again, most of you may already know this, but here it is, for anyone who missed it: CPUC has a Smart Meter Hotline at 800 789 0550. When I called, there was no live person to take calls, just a chance to record my comment. At least CPUC's recorded invitation to leave a comment is very welcoming. Faint hope?

I'm turning my mind toward solar energy, wind energy, and other alternative energies. I worked in the alternative energy office of Governor Jerry Brown's administration in the 70's. Surely by now it's possible to live with alternative energy and not have to be rich to do so. Right?

Much more current and informative update available here:

In particular, read the first 5 comments for legal insights.
Forget about "requesting to not have" smeters, begin by refusing them. If you believe everything PG$E tells you, you're already in trouble.
