In news that comes as a surprise to exactly no one, Mitt Romney lied about the length of his tenure at Bain Capital. And it’s a doozy.
Romney has maintained that he left Bain Capital in February 1999 in order to lead the Salt Lake City Olympics. The 1999 date is critical, because it allowed Romney to defend himself against charges of outsourcing jobs.
It’s like, come on, man! — He wasn’t even at Bain Capital when all those companies went bankrupt, laid off a shit-ton of workers, and outsourced jobs to China and wherever, so get off his back already!
Except — he totally was. He.so.was.
Documents obtained from the SEC show that Romney was “sole stockholder, chairman of the board, chief executive officer, and president” until 2002. TWO-THOUSAND-TWO. That’s three years after Romney said he left Bain Capital. THREE YEARS.
Romney has been lying about this for a decade. THAT’S TEN YEARS. He first lied about it during his campaign for governor of Massachusetts in 2002, and his pants have been ablaze ever since:
Government documents filed by Mitt Romney and Bain Capital say Romney remained chief executive and chairman of the firm three years beyond the date he said he ceded control, even creating five new investment partnerships during that time.

Romney has said he left Bain in 1999 to lead the winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, ending his role in the company. But public Securities and Exchange Commission documents filed later by Bain Capital state he remained the firm’s “sole stockholder, chairman of the board, chief executive officer, and president.”
Also, a Massachusetts financial disclosure form Romney filed in 2003 states that he still owned 100 percent of Bain Capital in 2002. And Romney’s state financial disclosure forms indicate he earned at least $100,000 as a Bain “executive” in 2001 and 2002, separate from investment earnings.
The timing of Romney’s departure from Bain is a key point of contention because he has said his resignation in February 1999 meant he was not responsible for Bain Capital companies that went bankrupt or laid off workers after that date.
Can you believe this shit?! Well, yeah you can. Because Romney is a dirty liar.
And do you want to know why Romney has been so squirrelly about releasing pre-2010 tax returns? Try this on for size:
Romney did not finalize a severance agreement with Bain until 2002, a 10-year deal with undisclosed terms that was retroactive to 1999. It expired in 2009.
That means, his tax returns would have proven that he is and has been a pants-on-fire liar for ten fucking years.
Now, here’s where it gets good: According to the Romney campaign’s most recent financial disclosure form, “[s]ince February 11, 1999, Mr. Romney has not had any active role with any Bain Capital entity and has not been involved in the operations of any Bain Capital entity in any way.’’ Romney said the same thing in 2007 during his first presidential run. (Is it any wonder that Pepaw McCain chose the Wolf Huntress to be his running mate over Romney?)
The problem is, if Romney filed SEC documents demonstrating that he was CEO, chairman of the Board, and president of Bain, on the one hand, but claims that he had no involvement in operations and no active role with any Bain Capital entity, on the other, he is opening himself up to investor lawsuits for the three year period he was supposed to be running Bain Capital and wasn’t.
In other words, he can either admit that he’s been lying for 10 years about how long he had an active role in Bain Capital, and therefore take responsibility for all of the outsourcing of jobs and layoffs and bankruptcies, or he can keep lying like the dirty liar he is and wait for the lawsuits against him to stack up.
It’s what is known as a fucked-fucked situation.
And yes, that’s a technical term.
Even a Romney campaign official said Romney’s claim that just because his name was on post-1999 SEC documents doesn’t mean he had any involvement with Bain Capital “doesn’t square with common sense.” And some SEC dude had this to say,
“It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to say he was technically in charge on paper but he had nothing to do with Bain’s operations. Was he getting paid? He’s the sole stockholder. Are you telling me he owned the company but had no say in its investments?”
Exactly.
But it gets even better: The Romney campaign just came out with an ad and press release calling President Obama a liar for accusing Romney of outsourcing jobs overseas (https://www.mittromney.com/truth) — when it just came out today that Romney definitely outsourced jobs overseas and has been lying about it for ten years.
