I purchased a macbook pro very recently and am disappointed with the sound. I am understanding that I need either or both speakers and wirless headphones as cord is not convenient for dancing around. Does any one know the best compatible items so I can then find themfor a good price? Thanks, Mindy

You can plug in an input line from your Mac or plug your ipod/iphone in it directly. It has great sound (I'm picky), a rechargeable battery and power cord and a remote. $100 at Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003VANOI6/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00).

Reply-Barry, can the portable speaker thing be plugged in to the wall socket as well, and what would an input line be? One from the headphone jack or one of the different sized port things on the side? Sorry to be such a neb about these things. Glad to hear there is something with reasonable sound. It's an ipod dock....hmmm.

There were two solutions found online, one was to turn up the preamp on Itunes and the next involved the midi set-up and changing the format to 9600 hz and it has made a great difference. There is nothing wrong with the speakers after all. I can hear it! Now for sound quality and good music the speaker will still happen here, at least it need not be immediately. I think I was most annoyed at the fact that I had not checked that out beforehand and was surprised negatively on such an expensive purchase. Please inform me if you think either of my found solutions to be harmful to the unit in some way. Thanks, much more delighted, me.

Yes, the speaker can be plugged into a wall socket and should be when possible because it throttles back its ample bass when running on its rechargeable battery.
To connect it to your mac you need a male-male audio cable (https://www.amazon.com/Professional-Cable-ST35MM-06-Stereo-3-5mm/dp/B002JCOX5U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1338594031&sr=8-1).
Or if you want to be really cool :rocker:, you can get a airport express (https://store.apple.com/us/product/MB321LL/A/AirPort-Express-AirTunes?fnode=MTY1NDA0Mg) and connect your speaker to that with the above cable and connect your mac to the airport express (https://store.apple.com/us/product/MB321LL/A/AirPort-Express-AirTunes?fnode=MTY1NDA0Mg) over wi-fi! You can connect multiple speakers throughout your house in this fashion and have your mac play music over all of them simultaneously! And what's more, you can control it via your iphone/ipod/ipad including seeing what's playing! It's a very cool setup!
