Tuesday brought great news for the marijuana law reform movement out of Oregon (https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/sns-rt-us-usa-oregon-electionbre84f07i-20120515,0,6434022.story). In this week's primary election, two candidates were vying for the Democratic nomination for state attorney general (no Republicans were running). The contest was between former U.S. Attorney Dwight Holton and retired judge Ellen Rosenblum.

The candidates' stances on marijuana law became a central issue (https://www.willamettelive.com/2012/news/medical-marijuana-decisive-issue-in-attorney-general-contest/). Holton was vocal in his disapproval of Oregon's medical marijuana law, calling it "a train wreck" and claiming it put drugs "in the hands of kids."

By contrast, Rosenbaum embraced the voter approved medical marijuana program in the state. "As attorney general," she promised, "I will make marijuana enforcement a low priority, and protect the rights of medical marijuana patients."

Rosenbaum's message resonated with medical marijuana patients, reform advocates, and the general electorate. She won a land-slide victory! With 70% of the vote counted, Rosenbaum leads Holton by an astounding 28 percentage points. May all politicians take note: opposing marijuana law reform can not only lose you a few votes, it can lose you the election.

Not just Democrats support marijuana law reform. This week, a nationwide Mason-Dixon survey (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/15/republicans-state-medical-marijuana-laws_n_1519176.html) of likely voters shows that 67% of Republicans agreed President Obama should respect state marijuana laws. This is in addition to the 75% of Democrats, 79% of independents, and 75% of women who want the federal intervention in these state-approved programs to end.

Clearly this is an issue most of America agrees on and they are being joined everyday by more and more people in positions of power who realize our war against marijuana consumers is a seven decade long failure. The latest is Gustin Reichbach, an acting justice on the State Supreme Court in Brooklyn, New York. You can read his heartfelt plea for reform in the New York Times here (https://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/17/opinion/a-judges-plea-for-medical-marijuana.html?_r=1), where he shares his own personal experience with cannabis and surviving pancreatic cancer.
