I knew the answers. I wanted to see if other people could figure it out. But it is too easy to find the answers through the Internet, as you have demonstrated.

US citizens were once interviewed on the street and asked this same question. Many Americans could not think of even one country (not even their own, the United States):

Go to Youtube and type in, "Name of a country starting with a U:"

Technically "U.S.A." does not qualify, since the full name of this country is:

The United States of America.

Well, let's see...

If that is the case, and I beg to differ (but it is remotely possible that I am wrong. It has been known to happen), then that would also mean that the two other countries whose names start with the word, "United," would ALSO begin, instead, with the word, "The." Those two other countries, incidentally, are The United Arab Emirates and The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (long form).

As a reference, my old friends at the CIA have The United Kingdom listed in alphabetical order under, "U":

Upon further research I sit corrected. The proper name of this country is, "United States of America", although in proper English it is always referred to as the United States of America. There are countries whose name starts with "The" but this isn't one of them.

United Arab Emirates, as in "the government, jurisdiction, or territory of an emir".

Respectfully submitted.

Yeah, I was looking at that just as I clicked send but couldn't stop myself. Thanks. This new discipline I've brought on myself is working though, for the most part. 8>)
